After watching the videos above, discuss the following questions with some
colleagues;
(1) Based on the two videos: (a) Do the two videos come to the same conclusion? (b)
Would you say that they agree with each other?
(2) Try to link examples from the videos to what you’ve learned about psychology and
the scientific method (the limitations of some study designs in either drawing cause and
effect claims, or the lack of generalizability, types of experimental designs, correlation
versus causation, etc, etc). You can also discuss the different types of studies, and which
ones allow for which kinds of conclusions
(3) What is an independent variable? What is a dependent variable?
(4) Regarding “sensational science”, discuss any examples you can think about. Did you
believe the sensational science? (feel free to look at recent media headlines for
inspiration!)
