Clinical Nurse III: How to Write a Nursing Exemplar
• A nursing exemplar is a reflective narrative, told in the first person, that illustrates the nurse’s practice. It describes, in detail, one specific situation that includes the nurse’s thoughts, feelings, intentions, critical thinking, and decision-making processes. The use of exemplars as part of the promotional process is tied to Benner’s theoretical framework and is a way to help distinguish a nurse’s progression from novice to expert.
• An exemplar should engage the reader to feel connected to the story, as though they were there witnessing it unfold. It gives the nurse the opportunity to meaningfully reflect on one’s practice and leadership experiences. If you are having difficulty making a choice, consider the following:
• How you impacted the patient and/or family and your professional growth in the process
• Role of the multidisciplinary team
• Complexity of the situation
• Relationship-based care principles

Leadership Exemplar: Describe one specific event or situation within the past 12 months that illustrates your growth as a nursing leader. This exemplar should demonstrate your role and how you have incorporated the leadership qualities of a proficient nurse as expected of a Clinical Nurse III into your practice. Strong themes include but are not limited to:
• Quality Improvement initiative
• Identified staff educational need and the implemented change (Preceptor) (Since working at MSK I have reveived lots of support growing my own practice. We have a great team of RN’s on our staff
• Your leadership role in a unit/departmental/hospital council or committee
• Evidence-Based Practice Project
Once you have chosen your desired topic, create an outline utilizing the Self Check Form. This tool will ensure you have incorporated all the required components in your exemplars. You may need to prepare a rough publish initially. Use this opportunity to seek assistance from a mentor to gather feedback on how to make your exemplar more meaningful.
