A qualitative interview question asks about the nature of things—how and why events unfold, including the context and the experience of those involved. To collect the rich, thick data that qualitative research requires, your interview questions will be mostly open-ended, and supported with relevant prompts.
An open-ended question should be:
Clear, i.e., focusing on key words that frame the response.
Accessible, i.e., asking in a culturally accessible way.
Answerable, given the interviewee’s situation.
An invitation to tell a story.
All open-ended questions may be accompanied by prompts that ask for more detail. The interviewer should be competent in a wide range of prompts, such as “can you tell me more about that?” or “how was that for you?” or “what happened then?”

Develop six qualitative interview questions that are aligned with your research design.
Write a reflection on your learning about qualitative interview questions, or your needs and opportunities to learn about other qualitative research skills.
