Discuss how the doctoral prepared nurse can translate/apply theory into practice
A theory is a systematic explanation of an event in which concepts are identified, relationships are proposed, and predictions are made (McEwen & Wills, 2019). The importance of nursing theories is to clarify the complex intellectual and interactional realms that distinguish nursing practice from tasks (McEwen & Wills, 2019). The use of nursing theories offers structure and organization when collecting data to describe, explain, and predict clinical practice (McEwen & Wills, 2019). The Doctor of Nursing (DNP) has the responsibility of implementing change through evidence-based practice (EBP) to improve patient outcomes, safety, and satisfaction. This effort to implement change should be guided by a conceptual model or theory (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). There are a multitude of theories that have influenced and changed the clinical practice. Imogene King founded the Theory of Goal Attainment in 1980 with the intent of a better explanation of the general nursing framework. King’s model shows that individuals are controlling, purposeful, and action oriented in their behaviors (McEwen & Wills, 2019). King’s Conceptual System and Theory of Goal Attainment can be applied to most situations in clinical practice. Healthcare providers focus on patient-centered care to improve patient outcomes, safety, and satisfaction. To provide patient-centered care the providers must understand the general framework of behaviors and needs. It is important for the DNP to understand the behavior that individual is demonstrating and why. This allows for the DNP to provide a holistic and patient-centered care. For example, this theory can be applied to the mutual decision-making process from the patient family perspective.
