Mental Health Statute
The Florida Public Health Act contains the rights of mental health patients. As a healthcare advocate, it is my role to ensure that all patients’ mental health is well cared for. The rights of patients include the right to quality treatment(Statutes & Constitution:View Statutes : Online Sunshine, n.d.). The act states this categorically, and it is upon us as healthcare advocates to implement this. The rising cases of mental health illnesses, especially amongst youth, are alarming. Suicide cases have been rampant in the recent past, and mental health is at the forefront of the causes of suicide. Being at the frontline when it comes to providing quality mental health care at the local level will go a long way in helping with the problem. The statistics show that the ratio of patients to mental health workers is at an all-time low. For this reason, volunteering in the local healthcare facilities will go a long way in ensuring that all patients receive quality healthcare. Being a member of the nursing union has been vital in looking into Florida’s various ongoing health issues at the state level.
COVID-19 has exacerbated the mental health crisis in the state. The pandemic led to the loss of jobs, which led to many people falling into depression. Active involvement in providing counseling and outreach to people suffering from various mental health illnesses. Providing proper care and support for such patients is number one in my role as a healthcare advocate.
In conclusion, it is not only the role of mental health experts to ensure patients receive proper healthcare. As nurses, we are also responsible for championing these patients’ rights.
