The Christian concept of imago Dei states that there is more to a human being than only the physical entity (White, 2020). This concept believes that the human body comprises spiritual and physical attributes (White, 2020). Imago Dei shows the symbiotic relationship between God and humanity. The Latin translation for imago Dei is the “image of God.” The Holy Bible has a verse Genesis 1:27 that states, “God has created man in his image,” which means that God created humans with the ability to live morally, spiritually, be understanding, self-actualize, forgive, respect, and love. The concept of imago Dei is essential in healthcare for many different reasons. Healthcare workers who are Christian and believe in imago Dei think that all humans are “created and designed by God” (Anderson, 2020).
Therefore, Christian transcends their love and respect for others, including co-workers and patients. Nurses are expected to treat all patients with respect, dignity, empathy, compassion, and humility. These characteristic traits of nurses that I listed are also Godly characteristics that are inherently displayed by professional, Christian nurses. Additionally, the concept of Imago Dei allows healthcare workers to have a commitment to patient advocacy and assisting with ethical decisions (Anderson, 2020). Because Imago Dei believes humans were created through God’s image, every person is treated equally and as a valuable asset to our world. This theory allows healthcare workers to feel a deeper connection with their patients and provide optimal physical and spiritual healthcare.
