Sports Physicals In the sports medicine field, the sports physical exam is known as a preparticipation physical examination (PPE). The exam helps determine whether it is safe for you to participate in a certain sport. Most states actually require that kids and teens have a sports physical before they can start a new sport or begin a new competitive season. But even if a sports physical is not required, doctors still highly recommend getting one. Case Study The administration of the local critical access hospital has asked the practitioner to organize a community service program to conduct sports physicals for local junior high and high school athletes at no cost to the student. The practitioner has the use of the usual physician office space or the facilityâs large meeting space and will recruit physicians, nurse practitioners, nursing staff, and medical technicians to conduct the sports physicals. Based on a survey of nearby school districts, the administration expects to serve 100 to 150 student athletes over the 2 days the physicals will be offered. Case Questions Which format would most effectively serve the needs of the students in this program? I would choose to format the sports physicals at the facilityâs large meeting space. Within that space you could use curtains on wheels to create exam rooms for which to perform those sports physicals. It would be a good idea to create at least 10 exam rooms with curtain walls and assign a provider to each exam room. This will effectively create a conveyer belt of people to get the most people in and out as soon as possible. White noise machines are small and portable and can be placed in each exam room so that private information is not easily heard in the next exam room. Patients would enter through a singular entrance and are met by a long table with 5 people that will provide paperwork and will take the patients information along with the information of the parent or guardian they are with. Once they are registered, a medical technician will take the patient to a separate area to take vitals/height/weight. Once the medical technician has obtained and documented this information a provider will come and escort the patient to their assigned exam room and conduct the physical. At the conclusion of the physical, the provider will answer any and all questions, sign the necessary paperwork and provide them with documented proof that the athlete is cleared to participate in sports. What are the drawbacks to the assembly-line format? Assembly lines are fast and efficient ways to process a great number of items or people in a small time period. The only drawback to having an assembly line in the healthcare setting is the chance of a hipaa violation. Which physical examination focus points could the nursing staff and medical technicians be assigned to complete? Vitals, height, weight, vision test, coordination test, strength test, and a memory test. When the practitioner is preparing to advertise the program being offered, the local newspaper asks the practitioner to identify three of the main objectives of the sports physicals for an article. How would the practitioner respond? First, time make sure that the athlete is healthy enough to participate in a sport. Second, to identify any deficits to the athlete and help to guide them with education and resources on how to improve or eliminate those deficits. Third, to demonstrate the importance of physical activity with the proper safety gear and the signs and symptoms of a problem that a sport may cause, such as a concussion.
