The doctor of nursing practice (DNP) must be reliable in order to provide the best quality of care and positive patient outcomes. Some aspects of leadership that are most relevant to creating a culture of reliability that the DNP should have include creating an environment of openness to change and fostering a collaborative environment. The four underpinnings of a reliable organization include empowerment, ecosystem, efficiency, and effectiveness (Belasen et al., 2016).
One team building strategy the DNP could implement to develop the four underpinnings of a reliable organization is through interprofessional education (IPE). IPE is effective in enhancing interprofessional collaboration, which is essential in the healthcare environment to achieve high levels of reliability. If one area of the interprofessional team fails to coordinate, the results could be detrimental to the care the patient receives. Through providing IPE, the various professions could learn about and from each other to find methods to provide more effective collaboration and improve health outcomes (Ezzeddine & Price, 2021). Another team building strategy the DNP can implement is to emphasize group identity. This strategy leads to a mutual support among the leader and team members by creating a sense of belonging. This supports team members in speaking up and improves communication among the team. By creating support and cohesion, the team is able to improve quality of care (Klaic et al., 2020).
The success of any organization is dependent upon effective leadership and creating a highly reliable culture. Healthcare is constantly changing, and therefore leaders must be supportive of this change by creating strong teams. High reliability is directly related to low rate of error, and in order to ensure reliability, providers must come together to coordinate efforts and create visions for the future. Teamwork in the healthcare system is crucial in supporting patients’ needs and providing the best quality of care (Ocho et al., 2021).
