You must submit a prospectus outlining your proposed topic and a possible thesis statement.  It should be approximately 5 pages in length (excluding the annotated bibliography) and structured as follows:
Research Question and Topic Statement: The most important part of the prospectus is the research question. Your research question should also be followed by an outline of competing hypotheses (or answers) to your research question. Here you should outline not only your general subject area, but what you specifically intend to argue in your paper (understanding this may change over time).  This section should be roughly one page.
Literature Review and Methodology: This section should characterize the most important debates related to your topic.  It should identify not only the field within which you are focusing (ie Psychology, Economics, etc.) but also the concrete methodology you intend to use to answer your question (ie the case(s) that you plan to study, the variables that you think are most important to your analysis, the types of evidence that you will be using, and the time period that you will focus on). It is particularly important to evaluate all major points of view related to your topic even if you strongly disagree with some of the arguments.
Outline: The next section of the prospectus will be a brief outline of the paper.  You should outline the major sections of the paper and provide descriptions of the elements that would be included in each section of the paper. This can be in bullet form. It does not have to be written in a narrative format; rather, you should outline the sections that will be included and include brief descriptions within each section. Your outline will likely evolve; however, it should give the reader a guide as to how you are currently envisioning the organization of the paper and the presentation.
