You are required to write a 2,500 word (excluding reference list) reflexive report in which you (i) review a range of research methods suitable for addressing a particular research scenario, (ii) articulate your final research design, paying attention to any issues that need consideration and (iii) justify your research decisions. In your review, you should consider both the merits and more problematic issues of all the methods under consideration. this is the scenario : A youth-oriented charity has become increasingly concerned at the rising levels of self-harm seen in young people and what this could mean in terms of their wider mental health and coping abilities. The charity has commissioned you to conduct research into this broad area but are open to your deciding upon a narrower focus within this. They have given you free rein to decide upon your chosen research approaches but have asked you to supply a briefing document to explain your chosen methods to them. Your report should take the following format: • Title • Review of possible research approaches (approx. 750 words) • Proposed design (approx. 750 words) • Justification of the approach taken (approx. 1000 words) Note 1: In the ‘review of possible research approaches’ section, two different data collection methods (which must NOT be a literature review, systematic review or meta-analysis) are to be presented that could plausibly answer the chosen research scenario. Note 2: In the ‘proposed design’ section, the student should present i) a third data collection method (which is not a literature review, systematic review, meta-analysis or one of the two methods included in the ‘review of possible research approaches’ section) that they think could best answer the research scenario, and ii) one data analysis method suitable to analyse the data collected by the suggested best data collection method. The following sub-sections MUST appear: Design, Participants and recruitment, Materials, Procedure, Analysis, Ethical considerations. Note 3: In the ‘justification of the approach taken’ section, justification should be provided for the data collection and analysis methods outlined in the ‘proposed design’ section. Competence in report writing (good scholarship, clarity of expression, structure, formatting, evidence of extensive and appropriate critical evaluation of specific research methods in relation to a given clinical , etc.) Excellent evidence of extensive critical awareness of good practice pertaining to the conduct of psychological research in real clinical settings, particularly in relation to key governance issues such as ethics, data protection, risk management etc., excellent consideration of the potential barriers/opportunities for good practice evinced Excellent knowledge and understanding of a range of research methods designs evidenced predominantly through a thoughtfully considered application of a particular method to a given clinical research scenario Excellent knowledge and understanding of a range of research methods designs evidenced predominantly through an excellent, extensive and appropriate selection and justification of chosen research methods to address a clinically relevant scenario, excellent critical evaluation/analysis of evidence in support of arguments.
