The Model Minority Myth
Throughout our textbook chapters and readings, we have learned about the concept of negative racial and ethnic “stereotypes” and perceptions. We don’t often consider the so-called “positive” ethnic stereotypes that are used to label certain racial/ethnic groups. The model minority image associated with Asian Americans is one such example. And while the idea that Asians are an exemplary group can appear “positive”, sociologists carefully note that there may be negative consequences for groups who are labeled as model minorities. Considering this, please answer the following question:
1) What is the model minority myth, how has it been applied to Asian Americans (e.g., Japanese Americans) and what are some negative consequences to this label?
