Okay for this assignment I am apart of a group project where our group was given the assignment of a cruise ship. My role is to answer the following question. What are some examples of efforts to change behaviors in those congregate settings?
Do not worry about the presenting part. I just need the paper to show people going on cruise vacation that now has been ruined by covid and the steps towards containing it. Implement protocols and ideas of how to seperate people and not cause it to spread. This is the assignment.
For this assignment, you will work in a group, deciding in consultation with your group members what will be your roles/responsibilities. With your group, you will help to:
research some interventions that have been tried for the public health problem of COVID-19, using credible sources
use what you learned from those sources to develop a theory-based intervention for a setting where COVID-19 is problem
create (and upload) a document describing your theory-based intervention (the document template is supplied below)
create (and upload) a Powerpoint slide set that describes and explains your theory-based intervention
present your research and your proposed intervention to the rest of the class.
The purpose of this assignment is to:
Familiarize students with social and behavioral factors which affect COVID-19 prevention, testing, and treatment
Give students further practice at the skill of searches using peer-reviewed scientific research, journalism, Internet sites, public health agency reports, interviews, and other credible sources of evidence
Develop students’ capacity to apply theories of health behavior to solving real-world public health problems
Give students practice at public speaking for making persuasive arguments
Strengthen students’ ability to contribute to collaborative projects, a key skill for public health advocacy and professional work
The COVID-19 pandemic is far from over, despite the amazing progress that the scientific community has made in developing medications and vaccines to control the novel coronavirus.
Even with all the vaccines and clinical treatments in the world, we will not control this pandemic unless we can influence behaviors at all 5 levels at which public health problems operate:
Individual level
Interpersonal level
Institutional/organizational level
Community level MY GROUPS THEORY LEVEL
Public policy level
Controlling COVID-19 is especially hard in “congregate settings” – places where crowds of people must coexist. Because the novel coronavirus is airborne, it can be transmitted easily when people are in close proximity. What can be done as part of public health interventions to promote vaccination, testing, social distancing, covering noses and mouths, washing hands, or any other behavior that will help reduce the chance of infection, hospitalization, or death? You will help to propose an intervention, given a specific congregate setting.
Assume that there are no legal mandates that require people to be vaccinated. How will you persuade people to follow public health guidance?
Mandates have proven to work well, because most people do not want to lose their jobs or be denied services, so when the choice is “get a shot or get fired”, even vaccine opponents usually opt to get the shot. But for this assignment, pretend that nobody is legally required to get vaccinated: what other strategies can you propose to get people to mask-up, socially distance, get tested, and/or get vaccinated, for a theory-based intervention to reduce COVID-19 transmission?
1. Research some interventions
By now, you have experience searching for public health studies in peer-reviewed academic journals. But COVID-19 is so “new” that we need to consider many other sources of information to find out “what works” to get people tested, vaccinated, treated with medication (when necessary and possible), and to practice common-sense behaviors such as covering noses/mouths and social distancing. Also, we need to consider the behaviors of policy-makers and lawmakers who oppose measures to reduce the risk of coronavirus infection – what things can change their beliefs, behaviors, or at least reduce the harm they inflict when they stand in the way of efforts to control this pandemic?
Your group will need to do a literature search of peer-reviewed public health articles, but will also need to consult other sources of information: news articles, reports from public health organizations, Internet sites, and even podcasts or interviews with actual people who have real experience trying to “do something” about COVID-19. Your group should use multiple sources of information, checking to make sure that each source is reputable, credible, and has verifiable scientific evidence to back-up its approach to dealing with the pandemic.
2. Develop a theory-based intervention and upload the document (just one for the whole group)
In HLTH 204, you have learned about several different major theories of health behavior (among the examples, the Health Belief Model, Stages of Change theory, Social Cognitive Theory, Diffusion of Innovations, etc.). Your group needs to pick one theory of health behavior change, and use it as the basis for an intervention to reduce the risks of COVID-19 infection in your assigned congregate setting. Use the examples of interventions that you learn about from your research, to decide “what works” and to develop an intervention with your group that could potentially be tried to help increase testing, vaccination, treatment with medications, or to increase the number of people willing to cover noses/mouths, socially distance, or practice some other behavior change that would help fight the pandemic.
The slide set should reflect the key points of your group’s presentation:
What are the statistics about infections, hospitalizations, and deaths in the congregate settings your group was assigned?
What are some examples of efforts to change behaviors in those congregate settings? ONLY ONE YOU HAVE TO ANSWER, THIS IS WHAT MY PART IS ABOUT I AM JUST PROVIDING CONTEXT.
Based on this research, what does your group propose as a theory-based intervention to deal with this pandemic in the congregate setting you were assigned? What theory or theories are you using to explain how the intervention is expected to work?
Lastly, how does your intervention work at each of the 5 levels of health problem causation – which levels matter the most in your intervention, and which levels are less applicable for what you would propose to do?
Your slides do not have to include a list of all your information sources, but it would be a good idea to include just one slide that lists 2 or 3 examples of the references that your group found most helpful.
