We have talked about the consideration of transforming data into actionable information, as well as the ramifications of reporting off of a production database. We will explore perspectives of its use in the discussion board as we examine the benefits and negatives of reporting and querying off of the production database versus other alternatives. After you reflect on this week’s readings and video, let’s discuss what we have learned as a class.
The use of a production database can be viewed from many perspectives. We will begin by examining the controversies by answering the following questions:
A. Discuss the benefits/negatives of using the production database as the reporting database.
B. Propose alternatives and provide an analysis of the impact of the alternative. Consider alternatives such as stale data, backup/restore limitations, maintenance of ‘snapshots’, long term storage, expense, etc. Be sure to support your comments/assertions with documentation from relevant literature.
Then, please consider your project and the transition of data from meaningless to meaningful.
C. Consider the information value chain (data, analysis, information, action, outcomes) (Strome, 2013). Detail the components with specifics related to your project. What data are you capturing? How can the data be transformed into information that is usable? How can the data be used to trigger action? How will the data impact outcomes and prove your project objective/mission statement?
