Violent Incident Case Study You are the chief of a medium-sized urban/suburban integrated fire and emergency medical services (EMS) fire department. The organization provides advanced life support first response and transport services. There are mutual and automatic aid response agreements in place with neighboring fire departments. Likewise, the fire department enjoys an outstanding working relationship with the city police department. However, a recent spike in violence, an increase in requests for service within your jurisdiction, and weekly civil unrest in a neighboring city have placed a strain on your organization and the city police department, which has regularly deployed resources to assist the neighboring city during the weekly civil unrest. During a recent response to an assault and unconscious call in a dangerous part of the city, the first-arriving fire department decided not to wait for the police department to arrive and secure the scene prior to proceeding to the patient. The police department was delayed in their response due to resources being deployed in support of the neighboring city during a period of civil unrest. A member of the first-arriving fire company was subsequently assaulted by unknown bystanders, resulting in minor injuries to one firefighter/paramedic and one lieutenant/paramedic as well as the loss of the drug box with controlled substances and the cardiac monitor. The company retreated from the area prior to police department arrival. The fire apparatus sustained damage because of the bystanders’ vandalism and was removed from service pending repairs. The firefighter/paramedic who was assaulted is the mayor’s son-in-law. The mayor called you at home to express his concern about the incident. You assure the mayor that you will address his concerns immediately. You choose to conduct a case study analysis and a review of response to violent incidents.
