To assist you in learning about the variety of clinical assessment tools, read the following partial case history of a person and discuss how you would approach the assessment:
Jack is a 35-year-old man and came into the mental health clinic last week. Three weeks ago, he suffered a concussion after in a car accident, and was medically cleared after 24 hours of observation- this included all the standard medical tests after a concussion. His toxicology screen was inconclusive. He has been referred to your mental health program after he reportedly began “acting strange” according to some family members. Jack insists he has never had any mental or behavioral problems before, and reports “I feel fineâ, and believes “everyone is over-reacting”. In a follow-up session, his physician reports she cannot find any observable physical effects from his concussion. He agreed to come to the clinic at the insistence of his family.
1-What methods of assessment would you use in your evaluation of Jack? Remember you are not acting like a physician, so approach this as if you are doing a first interview.
2-What specific areas of functioning would you want to inquire about?
3-What specific questions would you want to ask? Who would you ask what?
4-How might your assessment approach differ if Jack was an adolescent? What if he was 65 or older?
5-Do you assume something must be wrong with Jack? If so what led to your belief? If not what, why not?
6-What might be your next step?
Be sure to use research to support your points!
