This Week’s Reflection Questions In week 11, we are learning about how emotions shape and are shaped by our physical and mental health. For this past week, I invited you to consider one really important element of physical health: your sleep. I asked you to consider what would it take for you to get 7 hours of sleep each night this week (if you don’t already). In about 200 total words (0.5 points): • If you were able to more sleep this past week, what changes — if any — did you notice? • If you weren’t able to more sleep this past week, what got in the way? • How does a night of better/longer sleep affect you the next day? (e.g., consider your emotions, thinking/cognition, etc.) Empirical Reading Questions “Is the Emotion-Health Connection a ‘First-World Problem’?” (Pressman et al., 2013) Notes: Each empirical reading question is worth 0.5 points; if an answer is partially correct but missing key piece(s), 0.25 points will be given. For all of these questions, you’re asked to provide succinct responses (e.g., 2-3 sentences) – this is to help practice succinctly describing studies, in the service of building this skill for your handbook chapters! If you need a couple of additional sentences for a particularly complex paper, that is also okay and you will not be marked off for this. 1. What was the researchers’ specific, testable research question (or questions)? Make sure it is clear what the researchers’ hypothesis was. (0.5 points) 2. Succinctly, what methods did the researchers use to test their hypothesis (or hypotheses)? (0.5 points) 3. Succinctly, what were the key results of this research? Make sure to frame these in terms of the hypothesis or hypotheses identified in Question 1. (0.5 points) 4. Succinctly, what are the implications of these findings? (i.e., Why are these findings important? What is the big take-home message of this research?) (0.5 points) 5. Succinctly, what is one key limitation of this particular research project? (This can but does not need to be a limitation mentioned specifically in the paper). Make sure to specify why this is a limitation. This limitation should be something that is at least somewhat unique to this research project and not something that could feasibly said about any research (e.g., any research would likely benefit from larger sample sizes). (0.5 points) 6. Succinctly, how can you address the limitation listed in Question 5 in a future study? (0.5 points) Textbook Excerpt Questions Physical Health (pgs. 206-214) and Mental Health (pgs. 412-423) Note: If an answer is partially correct but missing key piece(s), partial credit will be given. 1. The textbook describes several ways in which psychological stress influences the immune system – and specifically, whether the immune system is impaired vs. enhanced. (a) Does long-term psychological stress tend to impair or enhance the immune system? Give one example of an immune system response resulting from long-term stress from the textbook to support your argument. (b) How does short-term psychological stress tend to impair or enhance the immune system? Give one example of an immune system response resulting from short-term stress from the textbook to support your argument. 2. Based on the information provided in your textbook, how do individuals with major depressive disorder differ from people without this disorder in their emotional responses to positive events? State your conclusion and describe the methods and results of ONE empirical study that helps support your conclusion.
