This is initial post: I believe theory based should be used in all practice because it allows a nurse to plan & conduct both meaningful and proactive care to the patient. This allows the nurse to be more efficient and also to have an effective communication with their patient that will allow the nurse to create a personal plan of care for their patient’s need. Hugh P. McKenna stated in her book, “Nurses in their practice are constantly theorizing and they draw on their knowledge of practice to make clinical decisions as to what might be the best course of action to help the patient (McKenna, 2014, pg. 66).” For example, in the beginning of the semester we learned about many theories, such as the environmental theory by Florence Nightingale. Her theory was all about sanitation and avoiding the transmission of microorganisms. I remember my first weeks of clinical, I did not know what to expect, but I had in mind Florence Nightingale and that it was very important to wash my hands every time I came in and out of the room for the safety of my patient’s and myself to avoid the spread of germs. A theory so simple as to washing your hands and maintaining the workplace clean and sanitized allows these healthcare places to create protocols for their employees to follow, which improves patient care. Hand washing is something that will stick with me forever and as well as other theories I’ve learned. I believe these theories have great impact in the healthcare and should be used in practice.
