Instructions: Select one of the arguments below. Students must select one of the below tasks. Analyze and map the arguments (or claims) within the following passages. STUDENTS MUST SELECT A TOPIC ILLUSTRATED BELOW!!!!!
1)Baltimore is a terrible place to live. The Mayor is on trial for misappropriating funds. The murder rate is one of the highest in the nation, and the Orioles haven’t had a decent team for more than fifteen years. Self defense is a potential option. Law Enforcement is over-extended. Your career is within the city. Job options in other locations is unknown.
2) If something isn’t done about reducing the National Debt, the United States will cease to exist. Congress doesn’t seem to care about the Debt because they continue to pass massive spending bills that “bust the budget.” So, I guess America’s days as a great nation are numbered. Parts of U.S. populous shouts for redirecting funds to human capital problems within the cities and farmlands / rural areas,vice overseas corporate investments and military spending.
3)Global warming is a hoax. Over the past several years, the earth’s temperature has actually cooled, not warmed. Recently, damaging emails from several prominent global-warming scientists were leaked to the media. The emails showed that some scientists had altered or neglected data that would have counted against their theory that the earth is warming. Yet on-site scientific measurements, media presentations illustrate increasing storm activities and purging of artic and antartic ice formations, raisning coastal temperatures.
4) Trans fats should be banned in processed food. Trans fats are usually non-natural additives to foods. Trans fats are known to cause high cholesterol and possibly increase the occurrence of heart disease. Anything that increases the occurrence of heart disease should be banned. Opponents state that profits are down, laying employees off jobs is necessary due to customers not eating innovative non-trans fat foods. Managers want menu options for customers to select which they perfer; better health or better taste and jobs.
5) The Grafs, Jeff’s family, asked us to join them for dinner tonight. We need to decide where we are going to go. We could go to the Mexican restaurant on the corner or the Italian restaurant at the mall. We don’t want Mexican food again so soon; we ate there just last Friday. The Italian restaurant is a little pricey, we think and Jeff probably wants us to pick up the check. That might be true. But Jeff really loves the Italian lasagna. He is particular. Maybe we can eat Mexican again and persuade him for a less expensive meal. Is it Italian or Mexican? Cheap meal or lasting friendship.
6) Traveling abroad presents potential for serious health problems and / or potential death. Not only are there evidences of deaths of travelers visiting idyllic islands but individuals are reported illnesses while visiting far Eastern European countries. Many of the illnesses are tracked to E. Coli residing in both waters and varying foods. Yet, CDC and FDA reports indicate that an escalation of E.Coli illnesses and deaths is occurring within the United States restaurant / eatery industries despite efforts of the Government to curtail these illnesses and deaths. So some believe that serious diseases await travellers merely travelling within the United States similar to COVID – 19. So therein lies the necessity for people to analyze and make decisions to measure the risk to travel abroad or just travel / vacation within the United States. Where is the greater risk due to the potential risk of illness and / or death regardless of which Terra Firma food and beverages are consumed. Do we travel abroad or travel in the U.S?
