This assignment will give you an opportunity to explore one area of the literature in more depth, become familiar with the most current developments in the field, and propose directions for future studies. Start by gathering at least 10 peer-reviewed articles and/or book chapters published within the last 10 years in an area that interests you (within the broad field of lesbian, bisexual, pansexual or queer women studies, of course). Here are some suggestions: health issues, relationships, motherhood, domestic violence, substance abuse, sexual identity formation, gender expressions, or whatever else you might be interested. Then read the articles and write a paper containing two major sections: a) a Literature Review in which you describe, critically analyze, and integrate information gathered from various sources (e.g., relevant theories, important research findings, areas of consensus and disagreement among authors); and 2) an abbreviated Research Proposal in which you identify gaps in the literature and discuss one area in particular you would like to examine empirically should you have an opportunity to do so in the future. Note that you do not need to go into a lot of detail in the proposal. This paper is shorter than it seems! The paper should be written in APA style and be 8-10 pages long (including cover page, lit review, research proposal, and references). Grade will be based upon students’ ability to: (1) summarize and integrate information found in the professional literature regarding a chosen topic; (2) narrow their research focus to an area that is understudied and of critical importance to the understanding of issues impacting lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, and/or queer women; (3) demonstrate sophistication of thought and advanced skills of critical inquiry and analysis (e.g., thoughts are well organized, points are clearly articulated, ideas are well reasoned); (4) demonstrate graduate-level writing (e.g., clarity, appropriate use of grammar, spelling, punctuation); and (5) write in APA style. This assignment is worth 400 points. The following rubric will provide you with guidelines for how to get full credit for the assignment. NOTE: Late assignments are subject to 5% point deduction per day they are late. A (361 to 400 points) – Excellent Work The paper exceeded minimal requirements (e.g., topic was appropriate, paper was 8-10 pages, minimum of 10 sources, articles and/or book chapters were relevant and published within last 10 years, APA style was used appropriately, included lit review and research proposal sections). In addition, the student demonstrated sophistication of thought and advanced skills of critical inquiry and analysis. B (321 to 360 points) – Good Work Minimal requirements were met, integration of information was adequate, and writing was adequate; but the paper can be improved in one or two minor areas. C (281 to 320 points) – Marginal Work Minimal requirements were only partially met; improvement is needed in one major area or several minor areas. F (280 points or less) – Unacceptable Work Minimal requirements were not met in several areas; and/or the overall quality of the work was very poor.
