The purpose of this assignment is to give you experience in applying the theories you are learning about to a “real personality” case study. You will begin by choosing a (usually well-known) person to study and analyze. Be sure to choose someone you truly find interesting, since this person will be your focus throughout the course. You may choose any person you like, living or dead. Examples of subjects may be authors, musicians, movie/television celebrities, politicians, military figures, etc. The only requirement is that there must be sufficient information available about this person’s life for you to adequately complete the assignment. Below is a short list of some interesting people whom you might want to consider; this is only a small sample, so be creative in your choice! Memoirs are usually too short and do not address early life so make sure it’s a biography. Supplement your reading with at least two other sources, such as newspaper or magazine articles and/or interviews (make sure to reference them in your references section). Your goal is to get to “know” this person so well that you will have plenty of information upon which to base your analyses of his/her personality. In the paper, you will analyze this person from at least four of the major theoretical perspectives addressed in the class/textbook. After each theoretical approach is covered, you may want to take notes with regard to how that theory may explain or describe aspects of the case study you selected to analyze. For example, if you are analyzing this person from a Freudian perspective, you may address the following questions: What do you about his/her childhood that would be of interest to a psychoanalyst? What evidence of defense mechanisms do you notice? Does this person seem to be fixated at any stage? Note that you do NOT have to believe every part of your analysis, but you must represent the facts of the individual’s life in accordance with the theories you choose to use. Cite your text or other professional source when referring to/summarizing the theories. REMEMER: MINIMUM OF 4 THEORIES NEED TO BE ANALYZED/APPLIED ON THE PAPER Your paper should be at least 10 pages of text. It should include sufficient background information on the subject of your case study (biographical summary) as well as thorough application of each of the four theories you choose for your analysis. Papers should conform to current APA style for student papers, including citation of all sources used.
