The primary objective of a cultural autobiography is to enhance self-awareness through
exploration and reflection of prior life experiences that have shaped the student’s
cultural identity. The cultural autobiography is a reflective examination of the student’s
racial, ethnic, spiritual, and social identity across the lifespan. The student is
encouraged to consider prominent instances and encounters that significantly impacted
their worldview, belief system, career interests, and life goals. This paper should be
written in APA format. The paper may be written in 1st person narrative.
1. Provide a brief description of your
racial-cultural identity development (i.e.,
do you strongly identify with your racial
group [Asian, Black etc.]; do you strongly
identify with your ethnic group [Chinese,
Japanese, Korean]). Also, briefly describe
other prominent aspects of your cultural
identity (e.g., acculturation status:
Assimilated? Bicultural, religion, gender,
social class, ability/disability, etc)
2. Provide a description of the theory of
racial, ethnic, and/or ego identity model
you plan to use as you describe your
identity development. What factors
contributed to your cultural identify
formation.
3. How would you describe your
acculturation status? What factors
influenced the acculturation process?
4. Did your religious or spiritual
background influence you? Please
elaborate.
5. How would you say your gender identity
shape your personal development.
6. Social Class can have an impact on one’s
access to resources and quality of life. Did
your social class influence you in a
meaningful way? (e.g., ability to travel
abroad, etc).
7. Have you encountered microaggressions
from others due to your race,
gender, social class, etc.? To what extent
did these experiences impact your racialcultural
identity development?
