Student nurse Amal is helping administer oral medications. One of her patients appears to take her pills, then asks for help toileting. As Amal helps the patient onto the toilet, the patient leans over and spits out the pills into the trash can.
The nurse accompanying Amal, Kensey, tells Amal to rinse off the pills and re-administer them. Amal is horrified that Kensey would say that, considering that the pills may have picked up bacteria from the trashcan and that rinsing them would not sterilize them. In addition, the pills may have been broken and thus be of insufficient dosage if not all pieces were retrieved from the trash can. All these thoughts raced through Amalâs mind as soon as Kensey speaks.
This is Amalâs second day on this rotation and the first time she has worked with Kensey. She wonders if Kensey is making a joke, but is too nervous to ask. Kensey is in the doorway to the bathroom and Amal is next to the patient as she is deciding what to do.
