Sensation and Perception
Sensations involve one of your five senses and perception involves the brain’s capacity to interpret, analyze, and integrate the stimuli presented. We cannot tune into everything our senses come in contact with or we would be overloaded with sensory stimuli. After completing the reading in the book this week, respond to the following:
Imagine you work with patients who suffer from a medical condition and need to change their behavior (i.e. eating healthier, stopping smoking or drinking, changing negative thinking, or increasing exercise). A colleague suggests playing musical soundtracks containing subaudible and consciously imperceptible verbal messages such as “I can change my behavior”, and “I am responsible for my health” in the waiting room.
Carefully discuss a minimum of three reasons for supporting or rejecting this proposal to engage in subliminal persuasion. Be sure to expand on the role of perception of pain. Your reasons need to be based on ideas presented in the course materials.
