*****THIS IS WHAT THE WRITER WROTE*******
We are faced with difficult decisions every day in both work and personal life. There are principles that I resonate with more than others and there are principles that I would like to utilize more often. In previous weeks we have learned about consequentialist theory, where we think about the consequences and how they affect the greater societal good (Treviño & Nelson, 2021). Keeping this in mind, I lean more towards the following principles:
Principle five is the principle of respect. We learn about respect at a very early age and it becomes a core value and foundation of basic human rights (Thornton, 2013). In the principle of respect, you respect others and their differences. A leader who respects others shows that in their daily actions by way of collaboration, welcoming outside perspective, and demonstrating care, concern, and interest in others (Thornton, 2013).
Principle seven is trust and being trustworthy. Leaders must earn trust from others by behaving in way that essentially demonstrates they care (Thornton, 2013). A trustworthy leader is able to build trust with their team by being sincere in their actions and extending trust to others (Thornton, 2013).
Principle eight is about communication and communicating opening with others. In order to communicate openly, one must consider what it is they are communicating and how they communicate it (Thornton, 2013). A leader who does this will understand that a team functions efficiently by having the information they need.
I chose those principles because they are intentional with how they come across to others. They can affect others in a way that can make or break a cohesive team. I think it is really important to respect your team and their inputs because it builds diversity. Building trust can create a bond that is closer than a standard work relationship. When you have trust, it is easier to work together and reach goals that are set forth. Communication is self-explanatory in my opinion. Teams cannot function properly unless they have communication from their leaders. If communication is lost or not delivered appropriately, it can ultimately create more issues. Now, the following principles are some that I have difficulty with for one reason or another.
Principle one is to demonstrate personal congruence. This is the ideal that you are at peace with yourself and you are able to demonstrate consistency in beliefs, values, and behaviors (Thornton, 2013).
Principle four is model expected performance and leadership. Essentially this is demonstrating how you believe a leader should behave (Thornton, 2013). This type of leader is a good role model for others with the responsibilities they take on at work and also demonstrating respect towards others.
Principle six is based on respecting boundaries. Boundaries are set in work, personal, environmental, time and place, property rights, and informational boundaries. An effective leader should honor all boundaries that are set by their employees and colleagues (Thornton, 2013). Honoring boundaries is another way to show respect.
I believe we should continually work to improve ourselves and to never fully be satisfied with where we are. Personal congruence is something I am actively working on due to lack of confidence in decision making. A leader should be sure of themselves and since I am not where I want to be, I chose principle one as challenging for me to implement. Next, principle four is challenging because I find myself reacting with my emotions which is not beneficial towards making a good decision as we found in previous readings. Lastly, when boundaries are set, I have no issue respecting and honoring them as the other person intends them to do. I have trouble setting boundaries for myself and I feel that can come cross as not being as confident as I could be as a leader. I would like to work on setting boundaries so others will respect me more.
