Our text indicates that men see things in more assertive, domineering ways compared to women who see the world in sensitive and supportive roles. Our text also indicates that women are more likely to face abuse in all aspects of life as compared to men and this greatly impacts their worldview on safety. I believe that men are more likely to skim or even fully skip over someone’s cultural cues and aspects as it’s too complicated to even begin to change to meet one where they are. Women, on the other hand, are much more likely to be open and accepting of other cultures as they empathize with people easily. This is one of the reasons more women are in and continue to enter higher education, in my opinion.
Minorities, especially in the United States, are discriminated against systemically and personally. Women, due to their supportive nature, are better equipped than men to connect and support minorities. Of course, European American women must overcome the inherent and explicit biases that are ingrained in them. Men, comparatively, are more likely to engage in stereotypical interactions such as those like the DJ in the Eddie Murphy interview. Due to this lack of awareness of being culturally dominant and straightforward, I feel that men are more likely to have African Americans utilizing code-switching to make the European American male more likely to move on from the conversation.
Our text identifies that men are men unless you’re gay. Gay men are believed to be more effeminate and thus more likely to take on a feminine cultural worldview. This is preposterous and deeply prejudicial. Men are just as likely to be sexist toward women as again they understand women to be submissive. This is a worldview that is almost universally accepted as most societies are patriarchal in nature even today. Women as stated previously are more likely to accept other worldviews and cultures as they are naturally caring and supportive.
Finally, social class differences have been a problem for millennia. The reality is that today those in lower social classes are typically prevented from leaving their class due to systemic oppression in the forms of healthcare access, voting rights differences, red-lining, the supposed war on drugs, and many other issues. Women are more cognizant of these issues and more likely to lend a helping hand. Men, on the other hand, have the “American Dream” mentality and believe that everyone can achieve the “American Dream” regardless that the “American Dream” is a dream, absent since the Industrial Revolution. This manly mentality leads men to diminish the role of those lower than them on the societal ladder because other than providing them services, they are not on the same playing field, looking at the world in a lesser way.
