A Professional Introduction:

While I am still very open-minded to where my degree in psychology will take me and have no specific plans or objectives, one area of interest I do have is school counseling. Currently in the school I work at there are many individuals such as, the guidance counselor, school psychologist, and day time treatment counselors/specialist, that have different roles in counseling that I find fascinating. I think that the guiding principle in school counseling is to provide support and guidance to students where it is lacking. Tang (2019) quotes, “The primary mission for school counselors is to support all students in academic, college and career, and social/emotional development (American School Counselor Association [ASCA], 2019).” I think school counselors are important because they have many opportunities to give their students opportunities throughout different stages of life. School counselors may be the only resource of counseling that some students have access too. Tang (2019) states, “A school counselor also may be the only individual at a school site who is trained to provide crisis support, such as conducting suicide assessments, or the only individual capable of guiding an undocumented student through potential career options (Walley & Knight, 2018).” School counselors have many different tasks however they also have the opportunity to individually connect with students and are able to learn how to assist them in ways that regular classroom teachers cannot.

The area I’m interested in working on is educational psychology. I’m currently finishing a Bachelor’s Degree in general psychology and I plan on getting a Masters degree in educational psychology next. I have worked as a teacher for several years already and I find these two professions are interconnected. A teacher has to know the way in which the brain functions when it comes to learning in order to be able to adapt to the different ways of learning of their students or help them learn and this is actually something I’m passionate about. For even God reminds us of the importance of acquiring knowledge; “An intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.” (Proverbs 18:15, ESV).
Based on my learning and working experience, I think the main goal of an educational psychologist is the study of how people learn, including teaching methods, instructional processes and individual differences in learning. Everyone is different and has different capacities and different ways of thinking and throughout my career as a teacher, I have discovered that everyone has also their own way of learning and of assimilating new information.
There are many variables that affect the way people think and learn. Just as we read in the article from the last module; “social cognitive theory subscribes to a triadic co-determination theory of causation. In this three-way theory, human functioning is a product of intrapersonal influences, the behavior individuals engage in, and the environmental forces that impinge on them.” (Bandura 2018).
