1. The Lumen materials describe five characteristics that may be used to define a “disorder.” List and describe each of those characteristics and give an example of how those characteristics can be used to define a particular disorder. (150 words.)
2. The Lumen materials provide a history of the deinstitutionalization process for mental health service delivery in the United States and give an interesting timeline of approaches to dealing with the thorny problem of providing treatment for people whose behaviors were considered abnormal. You also read a brief article about the connection between deinstitutionalization and incarceration. In your own words, please describe the deinstitutionalizational movement, including its INTENT, how it was implemented, and the range of consequences. Then, describe the relationship between incarceration, mental illness, and deinstitutionalization. (250 words.)
