PURPOSE: To give you more experience speaking before the class.
REQUIREMENTS: Tell the class a story you have prepared for this assignment. It can be a true story that happened to you, to someone you know or something that happened in history. It can be a folk tale, fairy tale, myth, or legend from any country. It can be a joke. It can be any kind of story you want.
When you choose your story, be sure to pick one that is not likely to offend your audience.
Try to keep your story less than three minutes, just so we can be sure to have enough time to let everyone tell his or her story. If you do not speak for one minute or go over three minutes, your timeframe score will be zero.
You can use whatever kind of notes you want but try to use minimal notes and practice talking to the audience without reading a lot.
EXPLANATION: Telling brief stories is an important part of delivering speeches, so getting some experience doing it can help you prepare part of the content of your future speeches. Telling a story is also usually easier than meeting the other requirements of informative and persuasive speeches, so it helps you get started without making it exceedingly difficult.
EVALUATION: This is a “practice speech.” It is simply meant to help you become more comfortable speaking in front of the class.
If you think your story might be offensive, then you should choose something else. For this assignment, you should be very conservative in determining what might be offensive.
