Purpose: The gender binary is a way of conceptualizing gender as existing in only two categories. This assignment is asking you to critically think and evaluate this traditional way in which gender is commonly discussed and viewed in society. Specifically, you are being asked to compare and contrast your perspective and understanding of gender to the approaches and discussion outlined in research discussed in the text. This assignment is intended to help you to evaluate, interpret, and support conclusions drawn from multiple theoretical and practical perspectives to explain content, determine its usefulness, and offer productive explanations. Why so much reading?: All students need a solid foundation for exploring sources and ideas more deeply. The process of reading for both information and comprehension is essential to moving from a “content novice” to a “content apprentice.” “Content experts” are then those who have the most knowledge and understanding of concepts.
Background: Else-Quest and Hyde (2022) discuss the idea of critiquing the gender binary in the introductory chapter of the text. Specifically they argue that there is an overemphasis on gender differences. This neglect of gender similarities is deeply rooted in the gender binary (Else-Quest & Hyde, 2022). This paper is asking students to consider the social, psychological, and biological issues surrounding gender identity and categorization. Use the research and information from the text to help examine and clarify your perspective to address the prompts below.
Tasks: Before starting your response complete the Traditional Masculinity Femininity Scale (6-item version) linked in the module. As stated in the syllabus and Obojobo modules on Avoiding Plagiarism, responses which do not contain BOTH in-text citation and references, using the appropriate level of citation will be flagged for plagiarism and receive a zero.
In your response, you must address all of the items below:
Definition & Explanation of Terms: (this criterion should take approximately 1-2 paragraphs to address)
Begin your response by defining and explaining the terms gender, sex, gender binary, genderqueer, gender identity, cisgender, transgender and intersex (You must use the information in chapter 1 and 7 to support your response and definitions.) In your explanation of the terms you must discuss the following:
Were you familiar with each term before this class and reading the chapter? In what context did you learn or hear of the terms, if not in this class? Clearly identify and explain which terms you were familiar or unfamiliar with.
Do the definitions of these terms match with your initial understanding? Are they the same? Or different from how you think about the terms? Do not just copy from the textbook. You are being asked to explain and discuss this information. Thus, you need to use your critical thinking skills and logic to make connections, compare, and contrast your own experiences with the research discussed in the textbook.
Critiquing Gender Binary-Gender Diversity: (this criterion should take approximately 1-2 paragraphs to address)
According to the textbook, gender binary can be problematic for “gender diversity” (Else-Quest & Hyde, 2022, p.11). Clearly define gender diversity.
Explain how gender binary can be problematic, according to the text. Do you agree or disagree with the textbook? Clearly explain why or why not? Do not just copy from the textbook. Critiquing Gender Binary-Gender Categories: (this criterion should take approximately 1 paragraph to address)
Briefly explain, in your own words, whether you think of gender as having distinct categories (or groups, e.g. males/females) or as being a continuum?
Discuss your thoughts or reaction to your score on the Traditional Masculinity Femininity Scale. Does your score accurately reflect your personal perspective on your gender identity? Why or why not?
If there are distinct genders, how many are there?
Biology & Gender: (this criterion should take approximately 1-2 paragraphs to address)
Briefly explain the biological basis of gender? What is the impact of biological processes on gender identity. Use the research and information presented in Chapter 10 to support your response.
Do you believe that gender can change, or is it stable and permanent? Why or why not?
Textbook and Research Connection:(this criterion applies throughout the response as textbook support for each criterion and clear connection to textbook and additional research examples)
You must support your conclusion with both research and/or information presented in the textbook chapter 10.
Additional Paper Requirements:
APA style in-text citation and reference is required. Appropriate level of citation is REQUIRED. Students may not use websites, of any kind, as a primary source in their responses. Submissions with a TurnItIn score greater than 25% may be flagged for possible plagiarism.
Papers formatting must be:
A minimum of 2 FULL pages, single-spaced, 12-point New Times Roman font or similar. Do not exceed 3 pages. Reference citations included on a separate page do not count towards writing minimum or maximum.
Do not use any titles, title pages, or headings, course name or date, etc. If you include your name or PID it should be included in the “header” of the document and not part of the main content.
Do not use bullet points, outlines, or numbering in your response. Essay/paragraph format is required.
