Proper Salutation: Address every legislator respectfully regardless of how strongly you may disagree with any position they take on a particular issue or whether you voted for them. Always address the letter with “The Honorable” preceding the legislator’s name.
Introduction: Introduce yourself as a Registered Nurse, stating your reason for writing. The introduction should capture the interest of the reader. If there is no pending legislation tied to the issue,  state clearly why the issue is important, suggested action, and clarifying what needs to happen. Discuss how the outcome will affect your patients or the community, negatively or positively. If there is a bill tied to the legislation, be sure to include the bill or bill numbers if it is in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
State Your Case: Demonstrate knowledge of the issue and exhibit persuasiveness in the writing by using facts from credible resources. Provide any references such as website links to credible and objective research sources. Summarize key points and actions, bringing the letter to a conclusion.
Be Polite: You can write that you are concerned and angry, but do not allow the anger to dominate the tone of your letter. Maintain a polite and professional tone throughout. Keep your vocabulary respectful at all times.
Provide Contact Information: Be sure to include your contact information as your experience can be useful to legislators. Provide a physical address, phone number and email address following you name and signature.
