Objective of Assignment:
• To provide senior students with examples of the work of professional associations in meeting
the needs of the profession and society and their role is promoting lifelong learning.
• Meet student learning outcomes 1, 3
Research a Professional Nursing Association:
Research a Professional Nursing Association/Organization that is relevant to your practice or
professional role. Select a professional United States association/organization from the list of North
America Nursing Organizations on the Sigma Global Excellence website. Consult faculty if you would
like to use a professional association/organization not listed on the Sigma website prior to beginning
the learning activity. Note: A nursing union, student nursing association, and The American Nurses
Association (ANA) may not be selected for this learning activity.
• Four (4) or more scholarly references are required for this learning activity in addition to the
professional association/organization website.
• The course text and the ANA Code of Ethics must be utilized and referenced in this learning
activity.
It will be necessary to read the ANA Code of Ethics interpretive statements and not just the
provision to fully understand, apply, analyze, and evaluate the content to complete this learning
activity. A link is provided to an online version of the ANA Code of Ethics in Canvas.
• Turnitin© will be utilized for the evaluation of originality of the work product.
Template for Professional Association Learning Activity (Scholarly Paper)
1. Introduction to Professional Association (~1/4 page) (1 point). Introduce the professional
association. State the mission, vision, values, purpose of the professional association. Discuss why
you selected this professional association. State if specialty certification is available to
members/nonmembers. Include if you are a member or are planning to join. Provide website link.
2. ANA Code of Ethics Provision 5.5 (~3/4 page) (Header, center, bold). (2.5 points). ANA Code of Ethics
Provision 5.5: Maintenance of competence and professional growth (ANA, 2015, p. 88). Examine and
analyze how the professional association promotes and provides for maintenance of competence
and professional growth through educational offerings (e.g., conferences, courses, online learning
opportunities) for frontline clinical nurses AND nurse leaders/managers, mentorship, specialty
certification, volunteer and committee participation, professional publications, practice guidelines,
and local and national networking opportunities. Do not simply list learning activities—discussion
must reflect analysis and evaluation.
3. ANA Code of Ethics Provision 9 (~3/4 page) (Header, center, bold). (2.5 points). Provision 9: The
profession of nursing, collectively through its professional organizations, must articulate nursing
values, maintain the integrity of the profession, and integrate principles of social justice in nursing
and health policy (ANA, 2015, p. 151). Examine, analyze, and discuss how the selected professional
association is engaged in and promotes principles of social justice and health care policy. Provide
specific examples such as but not limited to healthcare legislation and policy, advocacy for vulnerable
populations, and environmental health.
4. Achieving Diversity & Meaningful Inclusion in the Profession of Nursing (1 ½-2 pages) (Header,
center, bold). (4 points). Examine, analyze, and discuss diversity and inclusion in the nursing
workforce and why it is important to the profession of nursing and populations served. Then,
examine, analyze, and discuss how professional nursing associations advocate for, enhance, and
support diversity and inclusion in the profession of nursing. Do not simply address a single diverse
group—think inclusively (e.g., culture, race, religion, age, sex/gender, sexual orientation, disability).
Provide specific examples of how the selected professional association supports diversity and
meaningful inclusion in the profession of nursing. One or more scholarly references are required for
this section in addition to the professional association website.
5. Belonging (~3/4 page) (Header, center, bold). (1 point). Examine and analyze the value of belonging
to a professional nursing association and why it is important for nurses to be actively engaged in
professional nursing associations through initiatives, education, conferences, advocacy, networking,
and committee membership.
6. References & Senior Level Writing (UPS 320.020). (2 points). Reference list is required and must be
properly formatted following APA standards. Four or more scholarly references are required in
addition to the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses and the selected professional association website.
Students are encouraged to use Marquis & Huston (2021) as one of the scholarly references.
Application of scholarly content is demonstrated with scholarly references cited within the paper.
The paper demonstrates senior level university writing standards including structure, format,
organization, paraphrasing, word choice, sentence structure, grammar rules, punctuation, spelling,
style, and ability to communicate ideas clearly and succinctly.
