A strategic plan is a very detailed road map that notes goals, action or implementation plans, specific outcomes, and specified time frames to achieve this plan (Melnyk & Fine-Overholt, 2018). The strategic plan is designed by an organization to incorporate the mission and values of the organization with the growth of the organization. The organizationâs goals help to measure the outcomes that have been established and to meet and or guide the defined vision and mission of the organization (Hickey & Brosnan, 2017). Last week I was able to reach out to upper management, and I was able to find out that my organization uses a professional company called LexisNexis to look at the different initiatives and analyze data to determine where appropriate growth and demands will occur (LexisNexis, n.d.). Based on this data analysis, then the decision-making process begins with leadership to determine who the organization with serve, where the healthcare services will be provided and how the healthcare services will be delivered (Hickey & Brosnan, 2017).
My prior experience with strategic planning has been no involvement or even no understanding of what it entails. After this week, I have begun to understand the significance of strategic planning and the importance of healthcare providers being involved in the whole process. DNP prepared nurses are taught through their education to analyze data and can utilize critical thinking skills to balance high quality care and productivity (Falk et al., 2015). Our ability and our experiences as future DNP leaders set us apart from other leaders as we can change the organization for the better from a bedside perspective.

Question 1: How and why is strategic planning important to your organization? How does a strategic plan support an organizationâs overall vision and mission? How does a strategic plan support leadership decision make processes? You are encouraged to integrate examples from the strategic plan(s) you discovered last week from your place of employment and/or practice experience site.
A strategic plan is a document used to express an organizationâs goals and the actions needed to achieve those goals. This process is used to prioritize performance, improve resource allocation, support the organizationâs goals, and ensure those goals are backed by data (Cote, 2020). Strategic plans focus on innovation and quality across the constantly changing health care landscape. Within my healthcare network, the strategic plan is focused on scale, growth, value and accountability, to strengthen and position the network to succeed regardless of what the future holds. Strategic plans should reflect the mission and values of the organization (Strategic Planning, 2009). The vision for my organization is to become a population health leader. The process of creating a strategic plan started with the evaluation of the organizationâs mission statement: âwe heal, comfort and care for the people of our community by providing advanced and compassionate health care of superior quality and value supported by education and clinical researchâ.
Strategic Planning (2009) recommends having a smaller group, such as the executive board, do the planning in large organizations. This is the case within my organization. The Board of Trustees for my organization is made up of volunteer leaders dedicated to improving the health of the community. Trustees share their experience in large organizations and expert knowledge in areas such as higher education, business, technology, finance, human resources, medical science, and government affairs. The trustees are recruited by the nominating committee and are elected by the entire board for one-year terms. Although no age minimum exists, trustees may not be elected past 75 years of age.
According to a Strategic Planning article published in the Journal of Oncology Practice (2009), a SWOT analysis- an assessment of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in the organization- is one of the core tenants of strategic planning. A SWOT analysis may reveal weaknesses that call for implementation of one or more strategic concerns before engaging in others. A way this helps leaders make decisions is by assisting them in creating the infrastructure necessary to reach their goals. SWOT analyses can also assist in creating an action plan to address each strategic priority within a specific time frame, usually the next 12 months.
Question 2: What has been your experience with the process of strategic planning? Why is it valuable for a DNP prepared leader to be involved in the strategic planning process of an organization considering they are called upon to lead care initiatives?
Prior to last week, I had only vague knowledge of strategic planning and thought it had something to do with profit. I found it extremely difficult to obtain the specific strategic plan within my organization. I reached out to two different people and both were unable to provide me with a specific document, but one did direct me to a briefing regarding past strategic plans.
DNP-prepared leaders are a valuable part of the strategic planning process. A strategic plan can advance nursing quality and improve patient care by streamlining energy, resources, and time. An interactive planning process involving staff nurses, leadership, and administration can help excel a nursing team (Lal, 2020).

Strategic planning is the process of outlining goals, implementation strategies, actions, outcomes, and timelines for these goals (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). The acronym SCOT, helps with the strategic planning process (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). SCOT stands for strengths, character-builders, opportunities, and threats (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). This helps analyze the strategic plan and to assess or identify challenges and opportunities, along with delineating any threats or barriers with strategies to overcome them (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). Having written goals and timelines are essential for any strategic plan (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). By developing well thought out identified goals, that are written down with timelines, this helps to support the organizationsâ overall vision and mission. Strategic plans support in leadershipâs decision making as they tend to be well thought out, with clear goals identified, often stemming from a collaborative team-based approach.
My organization is also my clinical practice experience site. On their website, they clearly outlined their mission and vision. Their vision is to place patient and families first through compassionate and innovative care, along with delivering medicine of the highest order (URMC, 2022). Their mission is to again improve the well-being of patients by delivering family centered care that is compassionate and innovative, which is enriched by educations, science, and technology (URMC, 2022).
I was able to review my place of employmentâs strategic plan. They outlined in a 2021 progress report, the strategic plan for 2015-2024. They outlined that through their strategic plan, it represents, their collaborative effort to create an inclusive culture, build programs of excellence that cover research, education, and clinical care, prepare for new health care delivery models, and lastly having fiscal discipline to keep their ability to support all of their missions/goals (URMC, 2021).
The organization collectively identified five aspirational goals. Goal one is to be upstate New Yorkâs health system of choice, by developing faculty-led organization that can share clinical governance, increase their local and regional scale, develop care management capabilities, and improve patient experiences (URMC, 2021). The second goal was to be a preeminent biomedical research institution, by stabilizing research funding and focusing on multidisciplinary science (URMC, 2021). Their third goal was to be a preeminent educational institution, by increasing focus on interprofessional training (URMC, 2021). The fourth goal is to be the preferred destination for faculty, students, and staff, with the fifth goal of generating financial resources to thrive and enable support of these plans (URMC, 2021).
Question 2: What has been your experience with the process of strategic planning? Why is it valuable for a DNP prepared leader to be involved in the strategic planning process of an organization considering they are called upon to lead care initiatives?
Prior to this assignment, this was a topic that was I not as familiar with. It did take a bit of time and effort in searching through the clinical practice site in order to identify the strategic plan. I had reviewed with my preceptor along with my manager who knew that the hospital had one, but were unsure how to find it, but provided me with guidance on where it may be located. I was able to discover it and was impressed by their clear outline of goals with examples and the next steps they identified to obtain these goals. Having a written out strategic plan with clear identified goals is crucial in order for evidenced based practice to occur in the clinical setting (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). The goals should be ambitious enough for growth and learning to occur for staff and for the clinical site, but not impossible to be obtained. (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019).
As a DNP prepared nurse, it will be valuable to be involved in the strategic planning process. DNP nurses help to identity areas in the clinical setting that require change, seek out literature to support this change, and implement quality improvement through evidenced based practice. Again, in order for evidenced based practice to occur, clear goals and timelines need to be identified through the strategic plan. DNPs along with an interprofessional team, can work together to identify a vision, a plan, and their roles in the strategic planning efforts to bring about change in their clinical setting (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). Also having clear communication, leadership, and frequent vision and planning discussions help to encourage a successful project, all which a DNP nurse can help to support and guide (Melnyk & Fineout-Overhold, 2019). By obtaining a DNP, building upon oneâs leadership role, along with teamwork and collaboration, this can help to promote clinical practice change through a clearly written out and outlined strategic plan.

Question 1: How and why is strategic planning important to your organization? How does a strategic plan support an organizationâs overall vision and mission? How does a strategic plan support the leadership decision-making process? You are encouraged to integrate examples from the strategic plan(s) you discovered last week from your place of employment and/or practice experience site.
Strategic planning is essential for my organization to accomplish its mission and vision. The strategic plan is the tool used to guide the organization toward set goals (American Society of Clinical Oncology, 2018). In addition, it is an effective and efficient framework for successful transformation. The plan allows the organization to prioritize efforts and allocate resources based on researched data and sound reasoning (Cote, 2020). Everyone in the agency is aware of the goals, purpose, role, and responsibility which guide the day-to-day operations. Leaders in the organization can make decisions that align with the overall goals instead of merely addressing immediate problems. It is a means of tracking progress based on strategic goals (Cote, 2020).
In practice, leadership reviews the strategic plan every six months, and an outside firm evaluates the progress and provides feedback and recommendations for improvements. For the past two cycles, my organization has not met the goals outlined in the strategic plan. One reason for the failure is the employees are not aware of the goals and objectives. According to Cote (2020), strategic plans fail when employees donât understand the strategies. Another reason for failure is the goals and objectives are too complex and ambitious. The goals and objectives must be agile and executable (Cote, 2020). Strategic planning can be successful if all levels of the organization are aligned and committed to executing the plan.
Question 2: What has been your experience with the process of strategic planning? Why is it valuable for a DNP-prepared leader to be involved in the strategic planning process of an organization, considering they are called upon to lead care initiatives?
Many years ago, I was a member of a strategic planning committee to fund and create a new playground for the local elementary school and the community. It required a lot of interprofessional collaboration, exchange of creative ideas and putting disagreements on the table, and working out solutions (American Society of Clinical Oncology, 2018). In addition, it required a lot of time and commitment from the committee members to complete the strategic plan. The project was successful due to effective interprofessional collaboration and communication.
It is valuable for a DNP-prepared leader to be involved in the strategic planning process of their organization. It is beneficial for the DNP leader to understand the mission and vision of the organization so that the goal and objective of their care initiative are aligned. It would ensure that all levels of the organization work toward the same outcome. The DNP leader represents their interest and shows how nursing advancements positively impact organizational performance (The Advisory Board Company, 2016). Furthermore, the DNP-prepared leader can ensure that nursing time and resources are not over-exerted (The Advisory Board Company, 2016). Finally, it fosters interprofessional collaboration and partnership among all disciplines in the organization.
