Once the register nurse has completed his or hers nationally accredited nurse practitioner program, they may sit for a nationally certified board examination within their specific population field of practice. Although this is not required in every state, it is highly recommended to improve your chances of being considered for your job of choice. The two boards new Nurse Practitioner graduates may sit for are the American Academy of Nurse practitioners (AANP), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (AANC). The AANP exam consists of 150 150 multiple choice questions to be complete within 3 hours. Were as the AANC exam may have as many as 200 questions and take 4 hours to complete. As stated before, the candidate must complete a nationally recognized program with competencies for the population they plan on serving. They must hold an active, unencumbered nursing license from the United States, its territories, or from a Canadian province or territory. Official academic transcripts showing completion of the graduate course must be submitted. The selection board will then review the submitted documents to ensure they align with the Nurse Consensus Model. The expected time for application processing is typically 6 weeks. Once the applicant hears from the board, they may select their examination site and schedule an appointment. The minimum score to pass the board exam is 350 or higher for the ANCC, and 500 or higher for the AANP.
The National Provider Number (NPI), is a 10 digit identifier linked to a specific care provider. Since 2006, the process has been free of charge, and you may apply at anytime through the government website https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov/#/ (APRNs with NPIs, 2010). Although this number is not required to practice in my state, North Carolina, it is required nationally if the APRN is billing insurance directly. The Drug Enforcement Number (DEA) is issued to all providers who plan to prescribe schedule II-V medications as described under the Controlled Substance Act (Registration Questions, 2022). This number is provider specific and is used to track all movement of controlled substances through that particular provider. The fee is $731 for a three-year period. Though I am luck that the VA pays for such fees. The North Carolina Controlled Substance Act states the requirements for Acquisitions, storage, inventory, recordkeeping, and prescribing of controlled substances (North Carolina Controlled Substances Act, 2022). The program is overseen by the DEA and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS).
Applying for initial NP licensure in North Carolina requires an active, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license for this state. You must be approved to practice by the state Medical Board as well as the state Nurses Board, as they both hold sway over the practice of nursing (Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), 2022). The online application has a $25 non-refundable fee for the applicant, and a $100.00 for each physician you are planning to file under. In order to renew a license, your current APRN license as well as your RN license must be within 90 days of expiration. Your approval to practice, aka the Collaborative Practice Agreement, must also be renewed. Once again there is a $100 physician maintenance fee required. The NP must renew their license in North Carolina every by the last day of their birth month each year, and their RN license by the same date every 2 years.
