Discussion #1The most important resource is the course instructor, they are the ones that distribute assignments and grade us based how well we understand the material. They are familiar with the material and could provide the best assistance. Although, there are so many different and equal resources such as libraries and textbooks and even other classmates. I feel if I was struggling or did not understand something I would first reach out to my instructor since I know they would point me in the appropriate direction of what I am required to know.
Discussion #2I have been away from school for over a decade. The decision to start again was finally reached after a school counselor continuously called me for over a year. They were on par with the people asking me about my extended warranty. It’s that kind of dedication from my school counselor, that I believe will help me be successful. My counselor made the process relatively pain free. She was so helpful, knowledgeable, patient, and pleasant. That fact that my counselor is always willing to accommodate my busy life and that she will be with me until I graduate has eased my mind. Another resource I am very interested in is the library. My counselor told me there are a number of Master Librarians to help me procure the knowledge that I will need to be successful. I picture men and women in beautiful robes handing me books that I will need to interpret to fulfill my journey. Being able to call, email, or go in person to they library will be so helpful. This brings me to my next resource that I think will be extremely beneficial. Especially for someone like me who gets easily distracted. It is the tutoring program. I am a hands on learner so I think I may struggle with the online program. Due to my schedule the online program is best for me and my family. I am glad there is a program in place, to give me that extra help, if I need it. With that I look forward to to starting my journey. Thank you.
Discussion #3I believe that the library would be really useful resources to make me a successful student at university. I feel this way because there is everything u need to know as far as books, blogs, interviews etc. I like the fact that can look up anything and have access to anything you need to complete an assignments.
Discussion #4lies to Alan Guthrie
I am a first time college student so I am still learning how to navigate all the resources available to us. So far my counselors have all been amazing and very informative. They helped me with the online application a lot and were very knowledgable about universities policies and guidelines. The online classroom and it’s resources seem easy to figure out and the Halo practice classroom was helpful as well. I am looking forward to using the online library resources provided to us to do research for future papers and discussion boards.
Discussion #5Procrastination used to be a major issue of mine. It helped me a lot when I would consistently remind myself that my habit of procrastination was a main contributor to my anxiety. A big way that I have battled my procrastination is by telling myself “if it takes 30 seconds or less just do it”. It sounds like something small, but I have noticed that it is one of those small things that adds up to being a major benefit! Those little things like picking up socks on the floor, putting toiletries into their cubbies, and writing memos in your calendar or planner can become overwhelming if they are all put off. Procrastination still affects me in that sometimes I get scattered on how to prioritize and it causes a pile of tasks.
After reading the article “Crux of Time Management for Students” I think that I will try implementing the Pomodoro Technique that was mentioned. Taking the time to spend 20 minutes on a task with 5 minute breaks in between will help me because I tend to get tunnel vision when completing a large classroom task. Once I spend hours on a specific task I will finally decide to take a break. Since I was so mentally exhausted from the task I will get easily distracted and my small break will turn into a 4 hour break. Taking the time to pace myself and take advantage of my resources will help me with my time management and make me more successful at retaining and applying large amounts of information.
Discussion #6Procrastination is something that most of us have suffered with throughout our educational career. I consider myself the king of completing assignment the day of the due date. However, I understand that my courses are going to increase in difficulty as I continue my education and that I won’t be able to get away with my procrastinating tendencies. This year, I plan to prioritize my schoolwork first thing in the morning. Usually, I would go to the gym or some other activity before even opening my laptop and that would lead to plenty of late assignments and unnecessary stressful/late nights. I’ve been practicing the “Pomodoro technique” for years (although I never knew the name for it until now) and plan to continue using it because it’s an excellent way to do schoolwork while keeping your mind fresh and focused. I also advocate completing homework in bunches rather than all at once. I’ve found success at breaking my homework up in half (or thirds depending on the workload) and completing them at different parts of the day. This way, the work seems less overwhelming, and you don’t burn yourself out.
Discussion #7Time management is a skill that I am acutely aware of, but have more than often ignored. I have always been very punctual and aware of the important tasks that I must start soon, however soon is for later and not now. Thus I would allow myself to push these tasks away farther and farther into the future until it became a problem as well as a stressors in my life. Procrastination as we know it. This is how my mindset was, but the Army has a way of trimming this trait away form a person. I am constantly made to be on time and write down a list of tasks with a priority (urgency) attached to most of these tasks so as not to get side tracked.
Discussion #8There are many ways that affect my time management. Procrastination being the main one for me personally. I have put it into practice one too many times . For example, my toddler has a set schedule Monday through Friday at her daycare. I have noticed that when we are on vacation days I try my best to stick to her normal routine but some days its not possible. On those days I leave out her nap time & I tell myself she will be fine if I leave it for the next 30 min and I continue to tell myself that lie until I realize that she is overly sensitive and overly tired. Because I chose to leave out her nap time… I am now struggling in the evenings to settle her down meaning I now am wasting that time that could have been used to work on other things had I just managed my time wisely in putting her down for her nap at her set schedule.
