There are seven steps in the evidence-based practice (EBP) process. These seven steps include cultivating a spirit of inquiry within an evidence-based practice (EBP) culture and environment, asking the clinical question in PICOT format, search for and collect the most relevant best evidence, critically appraise the evidence, integrate the best evidence with oneâs clinical expertise, and patient/family preferences and values in making a decision or change, evaluate outcomes of the practice decision or change based on evidence, and disseminate the outcomes of the EBP decision or change (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). To ensure the most relevant and reliable evidence the clinical question must be asked in the PICOT format. PICOT is an acronym that stands for: (P) patient population, (I) issue of interest or intervention, (C) comparison, (O) outcome, and (T) time frame (Buccheri & Sharifi, 2017).
Using the PICOT format allows systematic research and evidence to be gathered to guide a practice (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). A well built PICOT question allows the subsequent steps of the EBP process to take place. The PICOT question that I am going to ask is: In family members who have a relative undergoing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (P), how does the families presence during CPR (I), compare to no family presence (C) affect the families decisions and feelings (O) during the resuscitation period (T). As an Emergency Department nurse, I have to deal with emergency situations such as initiating CPR. The purpose of this PICOT question is to evaluate if there is a comparison between family members being present during CPR or not being present during CPR, and if it affects their decisions and feelings during the resuscitation period.
