Information Search & Retrieval Exercise
The objective of this week assignment is to get familiar with information retrieval, the possible search strategies and the search strategies’ impact on outcomes. You are asked to find articles support your group informatics project this semester and demonstrate your search histories and results for this assignment.
Please review the materials and tutorials prior to starting your search
Find articles that are related to and support your informatics project this semester, using CINAHAL Complete at the TWU library databases
Repeat your search, using PubMed at the TWU library databases
I strongly recommend you create NCBI free account (PubMed) and EBSCO free account (CINAHL) to save your search history. Then, you don’t need to start over your searches when you want to review or modify it.
For the appendix requested in the assignment below, you would need to save and submit your search histories in a file(s). Here are some tutorials:

By 6/30 midnight, post your group’s answers to the following questions (in MS Word file) + your actual search history (as Appendix to your MS Word file) on the designated Discussion Board:
First, write your informatics project topic and an inquiry question for a section that will need a literature review (e.g., Background, Significance, or Discussion sections). Then, address the following questions. (Up to 1 point)
What were search terms (keywords) used in PubMed and CINAHL, respectively? (Up to 1 point)
How did you use wildcards or truncation in PubMed and CINAHL, respectively? (Up to 1 point)
How did you use Boolean Operators in order in PubMed and CINAHL, respectively? (Up to 1 point)
Compare how the following searching strategies impacted your consequent searches in PubMed and CINAHL, respectively? 1) when using a phrase(s) regarding your topic, 2) when using search terms and combine them by using Boolean operators? (Up to 1 points)
What were your search selection criteria (limiters: text availability, article type, publication year, subject age, gender, etc.)? (Up to 1 point)
What was the number of articles found by your various searches in PubMed and CINAHL? Submit your search histories (CINHAL vs. PubMed)? (Up to 2 points)
What was the most productive search strategy? Please share your results and lessons through this assignment along with some reading reflections (at least one of optional readings or anything else) (Up to 1 points)
By 7/3 (Sunday) midnight, Reflect on your colleagues’ search strategies and results; all students are expected to read and provide SUBSTANTIAL feedback to each other. (Up to 1 point)
Note: Your search report and your reflections on your colleagues’ search strategies will take up to 10 points of grade.
