PICOT is utilized by the health care community to identify and study a nursing practice problem. Consequently, PICOT examples that may provide insight into the use of the PICOT process may not be relevant to nursing practice as they are based on a medical practice problem.
P: Patient group or population
I: The intervention you would like to propose (must be specific and very focused: cannot be broad and all encompassing)
C: Comparison (so if you did not have the intervention, what then?) OR another way to look at it: as compared to your intervention
O: Outcome: what outcome are you going to measure (do not get too broad with this: it must be able to be measured)
T: in what timeframe? You must have a timeframe in which to measure your results…
When you state your PICOT it must be in PICOT format. Here is what I mean by that.
In the elderly patient at risk for falls (P), how does the use of a chair alarm (I) as compared to hourly rounding (C) decrease falls (O) in a 12-hour period (T).
Define evidence-based practice. Describe the difference between a nursing practice problem and a medical practice problem. Provide one example of each. Discuss why is it important to ensure your PICOT is based on a nursing practice problem.
Nursing research is used to study a dilemma or a problem in nursing. Examine a problem you have seen in nursing. Provide an overview of the problem and discuss how addressing the problem through nursing research can improve patient outcomes. Provide rationale and support for your answer.
