Part 1 (50 points; Due 3/9/2022): The first portion of the paper will be long, excluding references, APA-formatted (abstract and running head not needed), and will include the following components: Why this topic? And what do we already know? (5-7 pages; 35 points): In particular, students will 1) describe the topic they’ve selected in general and provide an overview of what we already know about it (e.g., has it ever been studied before? What have researchers said about it? When did it start becoming a problem/something of interest? To whom?;10 points); 2) describe their population of interest (e.g., adolescents, adults, college students, older adults, ethnic minorities, sexual and gender minorities—the group that is most impacted by the topic; 5 points); 3) provide measures of the scope of the problem (e.g., facts and figures from sources that measure how many people are affected, how much money is spent as a result of the problem either in prevention or treatment, how many lives are lost, etc.; 15 points); 4) provide the rationale/importance that provides justification for why this topic should be a priority among scholars of gender. In other words, why should your reader care about the topic you have selected (5 points)? Reference list (no page limit; 5 points): Students will publish their initial APA-formatted reference list to include all sources used to date in the preparation of their papers. There should be no fewer than 10 references for this first portion, and no references should have been written before 2017 unless it is a groundbreaking, watershed, or pivotal article. Magazine or news articles don’t count; articles must come from peer-reviewed journals. Part 2 (75 points; Due 5/11/2022): You will add to your first portion of the paper and include this second portion of the paper, which will be 6-8 pages long, excluding references, APA-formatted (no abstract or running head), and will include the following components: The first part of your paper that incorporates feedback and suggested revisions (20 points) Risk and protective factors and determinants of the topic (5-6 pages; 30 points): Provide a literature review that answers the following questions: 1) What genetic, psychological, economic, legal, political, and/or other factors increase the likelihood that this issue will occur (10 points)? 2) Which factors protect against the development of this issue (10 points)? 3) What is missing from the literature (10 points)? If you are unsure if your issue can be evaluated in this way, email me or the TA for assistance determining a way to address these implications in a way that is appropriate for your topic. Implications (1-2 pages; 10 points): In addition to concluding your paper and summarizing your main findings (5 points), this section will address the questions that follow. 1) What questions still remain about this topic and its impact on your population of interest (3 points)? 2) What would happen if this issue is never addressed adequately? Who will be harmed? How will they be harmed? (2 points) Updated reference list (no page limit; 5 points): Students will add additional references as needed to their initial reference list to ensure complete list of sources is presented. The final reference list should contain no fewer than 15 references in total, and no references should have been written before 2017 unless it is a groundbreaking, watershed, or pivotal article.
