One area affected by evidence guided nursing in the 1900âs was nursing education. As a result of The Nightingale Training School in England, by 1900 there were over 400 nursing schools in the United States (Global Health Education, 2020). Instead of having no training at all like the many decades before, various groups were now pushing for formal education to prepare nurses for leadership roles. As nurse leaders of the time began to figure out the necessity of not only academics but clinical knowledge, a group of nurse teachers began to include, âan emphasis on nursing experiences, phases of nurse education, clinical training, socialization into the hospital program, supervision, teaching, and a focus on nurse specialties including public health and school nursing in their revised lecturesâ (Judd, 2013, p. 122). These ideals remain the foundation for our profession today. Nurses soon began to feel kickback from physicians who felt that too much knowledge would take away from them caring for the patients, but nurse leaders stayed the course because they knew that more knowledge would improve patient care. Nurse theory became an essential part of all nurses training. Education also led to nursing becoming an esteemed profession, as nursesâ knowledge grew, they were able to show the community their capacity for learning and skill to achieve great things (Judd, 2013). As our society changed with the times from war to peace, and a recession to progression, along with the advent of new medicine and technology so did nursesâ education as we had to adapt to the changes, the ebbs and flows. Nursing licensure was required in all states by 1921(Carson-Newman University, n.d.). Today it is recommended by the ANA that nurses obtain a bachelorâs degree or higher to practice as a registered nurse, showing the advancement of nursing education over the past hundred plus years (Carson-Newman University, n.d.). So here I am at forty-eight years old obtaining my bachelors as well as my masterâs degree because I know it affords me more opportunities to advance in the profession. Higher education levels have also been proven to decrease patient mortality (Carson-Newman University, n.d.). It has been shown time and time again that the future of our profession requires us to advance our education skills and level to serve the needs of society like our predecessors before us have.
