On March 8 students will prepare a short response that directly engages the first 5 weeks of the course. This will be held during the weekly meeting time slot and will not be recorded. A guiding question will be posted in the Assignment Discussion channel(Teams) prior to March 8 where students can discuss and think about course material up to and including March 8. The virtual meeting should be used to support student’s thinking about course content. This is a timed study/writing period to complete the assignment in a virtual format with the option of discussing ideas in break-out rooms or to use the time slot to write. The instructor will stay in the General meeting channel in Teams in case students have questions or would like to discuss aspects of the course material.
Students who would rather work independently on this assignment and at a different time, will be able to do so. This assignment is due either after the scheduled March 8 class or March 10. It should take approximately two hours to complete. Students can choose to either upload assignment to Canvas after the virtual meeting or work independently and upload assignment on March 10.
Following Fred Moten and Stefano Harney’s idea of study, this writing jam emphasizes thinking in collaboration and not as a reduction of study as memorization and summary. Instead, study implies deep learning and creativity whereby the material that is selected is used to support a response. The intention is to enhance student’s focus, understanding, and inspiration via notes, dialogue, questions, and an intentionally designed supportive environment.
Since the time frame of this assignment is approximately 2 hours, the response to the question should be approximately 500 words. Students must carefully select the course material to answer the question. It is also highly recommended that before responding, students create an outline to assist in addressing points in the short time frame and space to write. Outlines do not need to be submitted. Only the final response should be uploaded to Canvas.
In preparation for this assignment students should have:
Completed course readings
Watched/listened to recording in Modules
Have some notes about readings, discussion, course themes
Comments from Customer
The response question is:
Discuss and make explicit reference to at least three works* considered in the section Bodies Sensing Otherwise (do not forget to properly cite authors who discuss these works). How do these works challenge the perspective of a “unified body politic”? You will need to clearly outline what a “unified body politic” is and how the works you’ve selected challenge this dominant idea. In your discussion, don’t forget to elaborate on the similarities and differences between the three works you’ve chosen. Following this, your response must also include some thoughtful reflection regarding the virtual class process of writing about these works. How does a collaborative virtual design contribute to discussions about the works you’ve discussed? If you worked independently, you can discuss whether asynchronous discussion in Teams supported your response.
