Objective
The best way to understand how the social world shapes the distribution of health and disease in society is to observe this world systematically. While this is not a “formal” research paper, it includes the basic elements of sociological research: observing systematically how health and illness issues are framed, recording these observations, and theorizing about them, i.e., explaining how they may relate to social contexts. The goal is to have you exercise your sociological imagination by thinking about the social construction and production of illness through media.
How to complete this assignment
To write this paper you will investigate a media outlet and explore how they “talk” about health in general or about a particular “health problem” in particular (what causes it, who suffers it and why, what should be done about it — indeed, why it is a “problem” at all). Options include, but are not limited to: newspapers, magazines, TV shows, open blogs, Twitter, and websites (for-profit, nonprofit, or government), etc. You can choose either one medium and observe it over a week or so, one medium and observe it over a longer time span (for example, through the archives of newspapers), or three media and record one observation from each one of them. The important point is to collect no fewer than three observations, whether from the same or different media sources.
Once you’ve observed enough to feel confident, produce a written descriiption of what you have discovered. As you write up your findings, choose at least three of the readings/concepts/theories of health and illness we have studied and include them in your analysis. Summarize their main ideas and suggest how the theories might explain your observations.
Pay particular attention to how the social or institutional location of the producer of the medium, the social location of the intended audience, and the time of publication or production may be influencing how the different media describe or explain health and disease. Make an attempt to understand how your own social location may be influencing what you examine or how you interpret your observations.
Layout
In your final publish, consider beginning by describing why you found that particular topic or medium interesting. Make sure to state your question (e.g. how does the TV show XYZ portray obesity?), identify the media and the data, and describe the data in ways that enable your reader to develop a good sense of it.
Final papers MUST include at least 3 readings from the course material, as well as 2 outside academic sources. You must also have a reference page that includes scholarly references (in and outside of the course materials) as well as citations for data collection, so I can see where your data come from.
Your conclusions should include a paragraph that explains the “so what?” or in other words, why this analysis matters. What are the social consequences of these images that you have explored? This is an important aspect of any research and requires a lot of thought. Tell your audience how public images influence our understandings of health and disease (and also consider what is omitted from public images- this is important!) and how the sociological imagination enriches these understandings.

Font and Spacing: Times New Roman 12 point font, double-spaced, with page numbers.
Title: Good titles usually enhance the reader’s experience, so make an effort to think of an interesting one (have fun with it!).
