Objective: Read and write a review of 2 research articles from The Journal
of Neuroscience that focus on a specific neurological or psychological
disorder. The paper that you will write is a 2-3-page college level paper with
an APA formatted cover page, in-text citations, and reference page, in which
you summarize the results of current biological psychology research.
Instructions
DISORDER SELECTION AND BACKGROUND RESEARCH. Pick
ONE disorder that you are interested in understanding better (for example,
stroke, autism spectrum disorders, Parkinson’s disease, or bulimia nervosa).
Search reputable websites (such as the National Institutes of Mental Health,
National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, and the Mayo Clinic)
for background information on the disorder that you have selected. Make
notes about symptoms, prognosis, possible causes, prevalence, and whether
treatment is available. You may also use your textbook for additional
background information on the disorder that you have selected.
FIND RESEARCH ARTICLES. Use The Journal of Neuroscience’s
archive (https://www.jneurosci.org/search) to identify 2 peer-reviewed
(scholarly) research articles that address the disorder that you have
selected. The articles that you find must be current (published within the last
ten years). Use the “limit results” section of the search page and select “Open
Access Articles”. These articles are freely available to the public.
. READ. Read the articles that you have chosen carefully. Note the
details about how the research was conducted (reported in the article’s
“Materials and Method” section) and what was found (reported in the
article’s Results section). Make note of any limitations addressed in the
Discussion section.
THINK CRITICALLY. Think critically about the research studies.
Pay attention to whether any themes or questions emerge across the articles
that you have selected. Do you think that the studies were well done? Was
the research important? How do these results fit with what you learned
about this disorder from your textbook and other course materials? Would
this information be helpful to a person diagnosed with the disorder? Speak
to potential drawbacks as well as to strengths.
WRITE A publish. Your paper should be a 4 paragraph essay, with
formatting and citations in APA style. Include a title page and a reference
page in APA style. You do not need to have an abstract or section headings.
Paragraph 1: Introduction. Provide a brief overview the disorder
you selected using your notes from your background research. Be
sure to include a thesis statement that indicates the purpose of the
paper is to review current research on the selected disorder.
Paragraph 2-3: Summary of studies. Each of these paragraphs
should focus on one of the articles that you read. In each paragraph,
you will need to address the following questions: What were the
studies’ hypotheses? What participants were included? What types of
research designs were used? What results did the authors find? Were
there any limitations of the study that need to be noted?
Paragraph 4. Discussion. Begin paragraph 4 with a summary of
your essay, restate the thesis and main points. Present your critique
of the research in this paragraph. Be sure to include both
potential strengths and drawbacks or weaknessefjks. End with any
closing remarks or conclusions.
