NURS 997: Independent Study
Introduction
The independent study project is a scholarly process that addresses a theoretically and clinically relevant problem in advanced practice nursing. The project examines the most current evidence and applies it to a clinical situation. The final product of the project is a result of work accomplished throughout the masterâs program and will be a manuscript of publishable quality. While it is not a requirement to complete your degree that the project be published, submission for publication is a potential outcome upon completion of the project, often with additional help from the independent study faculty, who is the co-author. Other potential deliverables of the project are: a poster presentation at the UND Graduate School Research & Scholarship Day, podium presentation to peers, patient education materials, others as approved by faculty. For students who have chosen the presentation option, evidence of the presentation is required with your project submission. Evidence includes, but is not limited to, a recording of the presentation or agenda from the function for which the project was presented. For students who have chosen the patient education materials option, the submission will include the materials that were created for the project.

⢠Describe a problem/issue, innovation, or inquiry for investigation.
⢠Analyze the current literature for strong, relevant evidence to support your inquiry.
⢠Synthesize the information in the evidence.
⢠Report findings relevant to advanced practice nursing.
⢠Prepare a scholarly deliverable for dissemination
Independent Study Instructions
Independent Study Instructions
The independent study will consist of the following submissions:
1. PICOT Question & Topic Proposal Narrative
2. Literature review matrix with strength of evidence
3. Abstract, Search Methods
4. Results, Conclusions and Implications for Practice
5. Background, complete reference list
6. Complete final paper & chosen deliverable (poster presentation, oral presentation, patient education, etc.)
If you choose the poster presentation option, you may use this example as a guide.
Steps for Project Completion
Note: Items #1, #2, and #3 will be completed prior to your final semester. The reason for this isâyour Topic Proposal form must be approved and turned into the School of Graduate Studies no later than the semester prior to graduation.
1. Identify the problem and develop PICOT question (patient/problem/population, intervention, comparison intervention, outcomes).
2. Complete your PICOT question and Topic Proposal Narrative draft and submit to your assigned faculty, for review prior to official Topic Proposal DocuSign form submission.
1. The submission should be a word document attached to an email. In the subject line of your email state: Topic Proposal Draft, semester & year of graduation (ex. Spring 22)
2. Multiple submission attempts will be allowed, as feedback will be provided and students may need to revise and resubmit prior to completing official Topic Proposal DocuSign form.
3. Enroll in 997 with your assigned faculty.
4. Start of Final Semester: Perform literature search
1. Document search strategies/methods used as you go along. Use the provided database search form (PDF). This will assist in writing your methods portion of your final paper.
2. Record final selected studies on the Literature Review Matrix template (Excel). Include strength of evidence. This will assist with synthesizing the literature and writing your results section.
3. Minimum of 15 references; within last 5 years unless seminal.
5. Write abstract and search methods section
1. Abstract (250 word limit)
1. Headings: Purpose, Methods, Results, Conclusions, Implications for Practice
b. Methods section
1. Must include search information from minimum of two scientific literature databases.
2. Inclusion and exclusion criteria with rationale are specified
3. Numbers of articles from each search step are documented
Results, Conclusion, Implications for Practice
. Follow rubric for these sections
a. Be certain to synthesize your findingsâ¦tell the story about the major concepts you found. Donât just list each article. We want to hear how you interpreted the science and grouped the information together to come to a logical conclusion for clinical practice.
b. Limit final paper to 5,000 words. Not including title and reference pages, abstract, tables, or figures.
Create Reference list
. May use reference software such as RefWorks, Mendeley, etc.
a. Be sure to include all literature used in synthesis as well as sources needed for background, frameworks, theories, others as necessary.
You will be required to schedule an appointment with Smarthinking or the UND Writing Center early in this process. These resources are not designed to be editing services but will provide students with feedback and ideas on ways to update and edit their writing. All students must submit final draft to Smarthinking or UND Writing Center prior to the final submission for grading.
⢠Literature Review Matrix for âScoping Reviewâ
While performing your literature search:

2. Use the provided Literature Review Matrix template (Excel) to record the studies you have selected. This will help greatly when synthesizing the literature while you write your results section
3. A minimum of 15 references are required. All sources must be published within the last 5 years, unless seminal. Your submission must include the level of evidence. Please document this information on the provided template.
⢠: Abstract and Search Methods

4. Principal Findings
5. Conclusions
6. Implications for Practice
2. Your methods section must include:
1. Search information from a minimum of two scientific literature databases
2. Inclusion and exclusion criteria, with specified rationale
3. Documentation of number of articles used in each search step
