Please review the statutes/regulations and labor market information in the state in which you reside or plan to reside in and answer the following questions:
What are the educational requirements to eventually become a Licensed Professional Counselor, Marriage and Family Counselor, Addictions Counselor, or School Counselor in your state?
What are the hours of practice and semesters required for Practicum and Internship in your state?
What do you need to accomplish to practice counseling legally in your state after graduation and to maintain your license through the years?
If your state allows unlicensed people to practice, what must you do to be in good standing as a counselor in your state?
In Colorado, a practicum and internship site supervisor must be an LPC, LCSW, LMFT, or Licensed Psychologist in good standing. All of these licenses require at least 2,000 hours of post graduate experience with supervision documented with the state. What credentials would be equivalent to this in your state and why? (For example, in Ohio an LPC does not qualify to be a site supervisor, he or she must be an LPCC.)
