Individuals from the LGBTQ+ community exhibit difficulty in finding health care in which they feel included and accepted. The LGBTQ+ community suffers from numerous health and mental health disparities that require access to effective services. It is the first empirically-supported mental health intervention designed specifically for LGBTQ youth. The AFIRM program assists in promoting positive, healthy behaviors by identifying and altering unhealthy behaviors. In addition, CBT-informed interventions have been effective in reducing depressive symptoms and decreasing sexual activity in adolescents, improving mood and behavior. An important aspect of this intervention is that it allows the participants to express their traumas and anxieties clearly. By exposing one to and erasing previous traumatic experiences with expressive writing interventions conducted over a number of days, it is possible to promote the development of stress coping skills by exposing them to and erasing past traumatic events. It has been shown that the process of self-affirmation and self-care has the potential to positively impact individuals by allowing them to feel a sense of belonging to a broader cultural community and reassuring them they are capable of meeting health care challenges. (Ross et al., 2018).
