Literature Search Strategy Discussion
discussion iconLiterature Search Strategy Discussion
Instructions
Complete a literature search within the following three databases: (a) CINAHL, (b) PubMed/MEDLINE, and (c) Cochrane Library. As you complete your literature search, you will need to document the following information for every search:
Name of the database
Keyword(s) used, including any use of truncation or BOOLEAN operators
Database limiters used (e.g., English language, date ranges, peer reviewed, etc.)
Number of Citations Retrieved
Be sure you limit your searches to only studies published within the previous 5 years.
Here is an example of two searches within CINAHL and one search within PubMed to guide you:
.
Search # Database(s) Keywords Search Limiters Number of Citations
1 CINAHL Impostor AND new graduate OR novice AND nurs* English language, peer-reviewed, published between 2015-2019 1,254
2 CINAHL Impost*r AND new* graduate* nurs* AND transition English language, peer-reviewed, published between 2015-2019 189
3 PubMed Impostor AND nurse English language, published within the previous 5 years 12,453
In your discussion post, you will include the following information:
Restate your PIO or PICO question at the beginning of your post. This is the question you developed Module 3.
Describe the process you used to determine your keywords. How did you determine the best way to combine keywords for the most effective searches?
What lessons did you learn to improve your searches that could be helpful for your peers?
Include a table like the one above detailing your searches after your typed response and references. You must search the three databases mentioned above using various keyword combinations until you find an appropriate amount of literature. Your results will vary depending on how successfully you string your keywords together. You will at least have three rows in your search strategy table (one for each database). However, you may have many more than that if you have to use trial and error to determine the correct keyword combination. You must document all searches.
Respond to two peersâ posts, specifically critiquing their selection of keywords and keyword phrasing based on their PIO/PICO question. Provide additional possible keywords or keyword strings they may find helpful to find more relevant literature based on what you learned in your own literature search.
Note: While you are conducting your literature search, be sure to save highly relevant articles detailing studies that addressed your specific PICO or PIO question. You will need to save at least 5 quantitative and 1 qualitative study directly applying to your PICO/PIO question. As you save the studies, make sure they were published within the previous five years. You will not be able to use studies more than five years old in future assignments. I recommend that you save more relevant studies than these minimums (as you find them) to ensure you have appropriate articles when doing your next assignment. This will certainly save you time later. You do not need to turn in copies of any studies for this discussion.
