Introduction
Multiple factors converge to influence children’s development of gender concept.  Some are quite obvious, such as imitating parental behavior and assimilating perental and cultural expectations.  However, other forms such as advertising, television characters, video games, music lyrics, music video, and computer software may be less apparent yet exert an equally strong effect on children’s gender concept formation.
The Assignment
Assignment: Listen carefully to the lyrics of the current top ten music titles on the attached word doc below:

1: As you watch and listen to each video pay close attention to references about the following:
– Characters playing stereotypical gender roles
– Comments that reinforce stereotypical views about age, gender, or occupation
– References to race or cultural affiliation
– Remarks about appearance/attractiveness
– Characters that play stereotypical roles (e.g., expert, villain. hero. bully, passive)
2: Take notes under each music videos listed on the word doc attached.
4: How does each song make you feel?  How do you think each song effects young listeners?  Is there any educational value in any of the songs?  Reflections on each song.
Grading Criteria
Maximum points are given when:
-  Detailed description of each song based on the prompts under instruction #1 (5 points for each song)
-  Reflections under each song- #4 (4 points for each)
-  Fill-in word doc attached and resubmitted. (5 points)
-  Points are deducted for errors in spelling and grammar.  Also noted is clarity of the submission and students comprehension of the content. (5 points)
