Select one of the qualitative studies published within the past five years from your Literature Review Synthesis Table (from Module 5) that directly addresses your PIO/PICO question. Try to avoid selecting a metasynthesis, systematic review, literature review, or mixed methods study for this assignment.Using that study, perform a systematic critical appraisal of its qualitative research. Answer the following questions:
Was there a clearly identifiable and articulated:
Purpose?
Research question?
Justification for using the qualitative design/method?
Phenomenon that is the focus of the research?
Were study sample participants representative based on the research purpose and sampling criteria?
Were participant characteristics described?
Was sampling adequate, as evidenced by achieving saturation of data?
Were data collected in a manner that minimized bias? Were the people who collected data appropriately trained?
Data analysis:
Was a verification process used in every step by checking and confirming with participants the trustworthiness of analysis and interpretation?
Was there a descriiption of how data were analyzed (i.e., method), by computer or manually?
Are findings supported by the narrative data (participant quotes)?
Are conclusions clearly explained?
Do the study findings appear to be trustworthy? That is, do you have confidence in the truth value of the results?
Does the study contribute any meaningful evidence that can be used in nursing practice or that is useful to the nursing discipline?
What quality rating would you assign this study based on the table below? Provide a rationale for your choice and state whether you would feel comfortable using this particular study as part of an evidence-based policy change decision in your workplace.
Quality Rating for Qualitative Studies
High/Good Quality The report discusses efforts to enhance or evaluate the quality of the data and the overall inquiry in sufficient detail, and it describes the specific techniques used to enhance the quality of the inquiry.
Evidence of some or all of the following is found in the report:
Transparency: Describes how information was documented to justify decisions, how data were reviewed by others, and how themes and categories were formulated.
Diligence: Reads and rereads data to check interpretations; seeks opportunity to find multiple sources to corroborate evidence.
Verification: The process of checking, confirming, and ensuring methodologic coherence.
Self-reflection and self-scrutiny: Being continuously aware of how a researcherâs experiences, background, or prejudices might shape and bias analysis and interpretations.
Participant-driven inquiry: Participants shape the scope and breadth of questions; analysis and interpretation give voice to those who participated.
Insightful interpretation: Data and knowledge are linked in meaningful ways to relevant literature.
Low Quality The study contributes little to the overall review of findings and has few, if any, of the features listed for High/Good quality.
This critique will be written as a formal APA paper with appropriate headings to separate major concepts within the paper. The paper should address the questions listed above, but students should not write in a question/answer format. In other words, do not include the questions in your paper. Instead, use the paper to narratively answer the questions above and provide a comprehensive critique of your chosen study.
You must also submit a copy of the qualitative article you critiqued with the paper.
