Instructions
In this current paper, you will read five research articles, often summarizing what the authors did and found, and using that information to help support your Gender and Filters study hypotheses. IMPORTANT: Yes, you need five references, but note that you can spend a lot of time (a page or two!) summarizing one reference but only a sentence or two summarizing others. Thus spend more time on the more relevant articles!
For Paper I, start the paper broadly and then narrow your focus (think about the hourglass example provided in the lecture). My suggestion is to give a brief overview of your paper topic in your opening paragraph, hinting at the research variables that you plan to look at for this study. Your next paragraphs will review prior research (that is, the five references required for this paper). Make sure that you draw connections between these references rather than just listing them. Use smooth transitions between paragraphs and build a case that supports your study predictions. Your final paragraphs will use the research you just summarized to support your research hypothesis. And yes, that means you MUST include your study predictions in this paper (which we provided in the researcher instructions, the debriefing statement, and at the end of these instructions. Use those predictions! They go at the end of your Paper). A good hint is to look at the literature reviews of the articles that you are using as references as you write your own paper! See what those authors did in their literature reviews and mimic their literature review style. Keep in mind that this Paper will end with your hypothesis (and your references) rather than moving directly into your study methods.
At the beginning of your new study two story, your audience knows some of the story from study one, so there is no need to rewrite what you already presented. Rather, you need to set the stage for the new sequel storyline. Introduce your new “character” (your new independent variable). Talk about this somewhat in isolation
(what does research say about this variable on its own). Once you define
and clarify what this new variable is and how it has been used in prior
research, start to show how it connects studies one and two.
1. For example, imagine that your new independent variable alters the
gender of the Twitter page owner. Some participants still see Lily
post a picture followed by Bella either posting a filtered or
unfiltered photo of Lily. Other participants see “Peter” post a
picture followed by Bella either posting a filtered or unfiltered
photo of Peter (note that we’ll keep Bella similar in all conditions
so the only thing that really differs is whether the photo she posts is
of a filtered or unfiltered Lily vs Peter). For your paper, you
would first want to discuss research on male appearance standards.
This might focus on self-presentation on social media, photo
shopping, body image, filters, etc. Then describe how a focus on
male filters might differ (or be the same as) from perceptions of
females and filters. Is there a double-standard in terms of gender
and photo filters?
2. So, step one is to introduce the new concept (GENDER) while step two is to
show how the new concept fits in with your original study (FILTERS USED ON PHOTOS).
IMPORTANT
Start off by introducing this new concept which is gender. Summarize what the authors did and found in each article and use this to support the Gender hypotheses.
The hypothesis is:
In general, we predicted that if participants saw a Twitter user’s friend post an unfiltered (and less flattering) photo of the user that differed from a filtered photo the user originally posted (i.e. the unfiltered condition), then they would more strongly agree that the original Twitter user seemed insecure and dissatisfied about their appearance, at least when compared to participants who saw the friend repost the original filtered photo.
We also predicted that participants could rate the Twitter user as more insecure in the female photo condition than in the male photo condition.
