Todayâs family term usually denotes a couple and their children without indicating gender, marriage, or biological relationships. Today, you can see blended, single-parent, and extended families. Family is a complex, diverse, and dynamic societal unit, often consisting of parents and children related by legal, genetic, and marriage. According to Green, S. (2018), the structural component of assessment explores which individuals are within the familyâs current life cycle.
Non-traditional family structures can take several forms, including same-sex marriage, single parenthood, cohabitation, and polygamous families. With the legalization of same-sex marriage, non-traditional families are becoming more and more popular. It is essential to understand and acknowledge non-traditional families because this will aid in the assessment, planning, and intervention for family health promotion and offer equal opportunities in health for the families so they can have trust in the healthcare and be ready to speak out if they are experiencing any health concerns. It also helps to understand who is included in the support system for the patient.
The theory that holds that each individual of a family unit or system influences other parts of the system is called the Family System Theory, developed by Dr. Murray Brown (Green, S. 2018). According to this theory, understanding cannot be done just by studying the person alone; the family process must also be considered. Involving the family members and getting to understand the role they play and the support system. Different types of assessment of the family process must be considered, such as the structural, functional, and developmental, and assess the primary caregiverâs part, risk factors, and support system., or emotional ties (Green, S.2018)

Discussion #2The definition of family has changed and even the dictionary at this time provides multiple definitions alone for the word family. One idea or definition of a family is noted to be two or more people who share a common goal, similar values, and long-term idea or commitment to their idea of togetherness (H, 2019). The idea of family is different in many households, family is seen through a different lens in different cultures, traditions, and lifestyles. The acknowledgment of each person as to who they are and the idea of the family which they represent is imperative to be acknowledged, the culture of a person is based on their idea of family, how they see family, how they see themselves in their role as part of that family. Family Systems theory is able to be used in all types of families in relation to how someone uses the family in relation to a possible support system. The use of the interactions of a modern family tends to not follow the idea of family for the 1950âs such as a mom, dad, and 2.5 children, now the family looks different to every person, a family does not have to look the same for each person. Knowing that the family is seen as an essential part of the development of the person into who they are, no matter the look of the family will help direct how a nurse is able to use this group as either support or motivation to change an outcome.

Discussion #3There is a multitude of family structures encompassing today’s society. The direct correlation between bloodline and genetics is termed family of origin (Green, 2018). A nuclear family is a couple that is married with their children (Green, 2018). A single-parent family is a mother or father with their children (Green, 2018). A blended family is a family where a couple brings together their children from previous relationships (Green, 2018). Today, however, family of choice is a family composed of anyone who treats each other as family who supports each other and provides emotional well-being (Green, 2018). Family of choice can include anyone of choice such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender, queer (LBGTQ), friends and even pets. Family of choice does not have to be genetically related to be considered family (Green, 2018).
It is important for nurses to acknowledge non-traditional family structures because they can have complex family dynamics and understanding. When a nurse understands what people consider their family the nurse can then plan their interventions based on assessments from non-traditional family structures.
The family systems theory is a theory that âholds that each individual or subsystem of a family unit or system influences other parts of the system; therefore, an individual cannot be studied in isolation from the family.â (Green, 2018). The family system is treated as one unit and every member of the family acts as a smaller unit of the whole family with their own ideas. Each member is not alone but remains part of the family unit. When there is change in the unit the other members react and adapt in accordance with the change to stay a stable unit (Green, 2018). An example of the family systems theory is when a father decides to move to a new house it alters the entire system of the familyâs stability. The family must move thus affecting the children who must move to new schools and begin to learn a new schedule. The whole family acts as a unit and when they move and settle in, they become stable again, together.

Discussion #4There are several ways to reduce disease risk by eating a healthy diet, exercising, and not smoking. However, family health history strongly influences the risk of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes, or cancer. Assessments on family health history can help reduce the risk of developing health problems as they lead to early detection. There are three levels in the health promotion primary, secondary and tertiary. The nurse intervenes the condition of the individual or the client such as if the disease has been not yet progressed, but the person is prone to the disease then nurse can easily implement the primary health promotion (Hancock, 2021). The nurseâs knowledge of a family’s health promotion includes knowing risk factors caused by sicknesses and diseases, health risks, when immunizations have been given and what is due, and most importantly health education to keep a family informed for healthy living (Green, 2018). Nursing is so broad when it comes to health promotion. As nurses we know what the books teach us nut that is why it always good to use critical thinking and experience to make your final decisions. In order to improve individual’s health, you first have to treat each person as their own person. Every individual is different nonmatter if they came from the same family or even if they have the same disease or disorder. to gain control in patients they have to be able to trust you and to know that you care about them not just collecting a paycheck, sometimes as healthcare professionals we move so fast we do not actually pay attention to , does your patient actually know what you said? that’s why the teach back method is always important so once you leave your patients presents you can be confident that they are familiar on what to do day to day,

Discussion #5The concept of family health is essential because many people usually suffer from different genetic diseases. For example, there is an increase in the risk of developing breast cancer among women in their menopause most frequently. Therefore, when there is a routine check-up of these health disparities, promoting the adoption of a healthy lifestyle is essential in family health. The healthcare provider should have vast knowledge concerning the medical history of family members to enhance the prevention of diseases (Imanipour & Kiwanuka, 2020).
Moreover, there is three-level in health promotion strategies. These include primary, secondary, and tertiary health promotion (Hancock & Health, 2021). During health promotion activities, the nurse intervenes at the level of the diseases. If the conditions have not progressed in the individual, but the individual has an increased risk of developing the diseases, the nurse implements primary health strategies. For example, the nurses will identify this past medical history in a family with a past medical history of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases such as stroke and hypertension. The nurse will educate the family on the primary health promotion strategies. These include a healthy lifestyle such as physical exercise, eating food that has less cholesterol, screening for hypertension and diabetes, etc. Therefore the nurse will determine the appropriate strategy thorough history taking.

Discussion #6The Idea of family health is broad and not well defined, due to each family dynamic may have a different view of what is considered a version of health (Denham, 1995). Family plays a huge part in the health of a community, a healthy family assists in the health of each individual person through their life stages. The idea of family health is important because the family can support, influence, and change the trajectory of the family in and of itself and their idea of health (Barnes, Hanson, Novilla, Magnusson, Crandall, et, al 2020). There are outside factors that influence choosing the types of strategic education models for use in the promotion of a patient and their health. Understanding a patient and familyâs health literacy should be the first thing. With this understanding alone the types of educational models result in more kinesthetic, and visual learning. This will allow for greater teach-back, retention, and continued repetition increasing the health literacy of the patient and family (Heath, 2017). Knowing the patient’s preference or learning, how they and their family will learn best allows for the family to have control, and options, and in turn with them having this in place you elicit the buy-in of the family to get to the place of optimal health.
